Dropping the engine...
Can I unbolt the front crossmember and suspension, and raise the car up off the motor and front suspension??

Should be able to. Remove bolts from engine cross member, tranny cross member, and anything attached to them then raise the car up. Would take less time to raise the engine out of the car though. You're gonna have to disconnect everything from the top side of the engine anyways. I'm very interested in how this works out though. My dad is eventually going to get a two post lift in his shop. I say go for it and let us all know how it goes.

Yea - on the rx8s you actually do it from the bottom now. THe engine will come out either way, but it seems easier to take it out from the top - less stuff to undo.
Any reason why you want to take it out from the bottom? |

I want to take off the front crossmember anyways so I can wire wheel and sand the frame rails and crossmember. I'm going to swap the motor eventually, so I don't care which way it comes out or what happens to it.

im curious how well this went. I had to pull the motor from a parts car yesterday to get the chassis scrapped but i just opted for the normal top pull since the car is in bad shape.

I can tell you that a buddy and I did his engine swap this way. We put small jackstands under the frame rails, placed a towel under the engine, rolled a jack under the oil pan, took the crossmember free of the car, and lowered it to the ground. We were able to then pull the dizzy (should have done it earlier), rock the engine over to get the jack out, and then just dragged the towel with motor out the nose of the car.
The plastic panel under the bumper will flex a little, and the motor just slides out. We were surprised how well it went. |

i just did this with mine, cause we were too lazy to get the hoist.
and what do you know it was easier. you need to remove the steering center link, support engine and trans, pull the front mount plate thing, and then move everything back 1/2" then drop it down. subframe can stay in the car of all things. |

Ben, I'm junking the FB tomorrow. The 5.0 is going to go in my 'vert. I just don't have time for the FB, and it's basically stripped and rusting away.
