Default Tips for cleaning up parts?

I just got my 5 lug swap parts off a junk yard car. I wanted to clean them up a bit. Including the knuckle, which is a little rusty. I would like to powder coat it after I clean it up but that costs a lot. The main Issue I have is I live in the barracks, I have no garage. I can get to a shop but if I leave the parts over night I risk them walking away on me. I know there is a paint that a few guys used on transmissions and other driveline parts, however I forgot the name. Any help would be great.

Paint wise I have no idea, however when I was doing alot of work on my FC had had tons of spare parts I would get some spray-on oven cleaner and liberally coat them, then toss them in the oven for a bit. Seemed to work great to me, of corse I only did this with engine parts so I'm not sure how it would work for what you have.

For your suspension components you might try Duplicolor Brake Caliper Paint or their wheel coatings. We have the red caliper paint on our calipers and after many years they still look great.

You might call ahead to the powder coaters and see if they can do it while you wait. Explain your situation and they might be accomodating. It doesnt take very long and since they cook it for 10 minutes or so you dont have to wait for it to dry, just cool down! If they wont do that they may be willing to sandblast the parts for you while you wait and then you can take them "home" to duplicolor them.

What would be good for getting the rust off of the knuckle?

I'll just throw this out there. I needed to clean up a carb and found the
carb cleaner in the gallon can was so safe it could be used to water your
plants, needless to say it didn't work well. I then googled around and found
out that good ole lacquer thinner still has all the best ingredients the carb
cleaner used to have (acetone, etc). I bought a gallon and it work great.

I'm sure you could use this or the mentioned oven cleaner for the first pass
and then a good soak in alcohol will get it ready to paint. For rust you can
use a wire brush and then a rust converter or rust converter paint like POR-15
or Rustoleum. Depends on your budget.

(1st gen guys now ducks and runs out of 2nd gen section)

Thanks for the help. I would buy off line but shipping to base is a pain. Takes 2 to 3 days longer for me to get it.
