				Exhast manifold-crack

Wanted some opinions on this. It's a S5 turbo manifold. Before starting a rebuild the engine had no issues with leaks. My intention is to slap it back on and milk as much life out of the manifold as possible.

![]() ![]() I've seen some people get similar cracks welded. But from what I've been told those welds are often times more problematic than the crack they were supposed to fix. |

If that's the only one I wouldn't be too worried. The more experienced guys may have something to add though.

Oh that's not bad at all. I pulled a set of the twins off my FD and I had SEVERAL cracks that were about 1/16" thick. The little piece that separates the two sections in the manifold had a crack running all the way through it that was about 1/8" thick. Cracks are common on FD manifolds. I'm not sure how common they are on FC manifolds but an FD owner would look at that and not even think twice about reusing it haha.

Is that pic prior to cleaning the area?

If that's how it was when you pulled it off, it looks okay - there's no sign of exhaust leaking past the crack. -Ted |

^I cleaned it up with some acetone on a rag. But that area wasn't significantly worse than the rest.

As Ted said looks ok. There is no problem having them welded up. If it starts to leak ship it to me and I will weld it up for free. I will grind it out diepen it to make sure I get the crack ground out and fill er back in.

Thanks Chibi, very kind of you.

Whats everyone's opinions on welding a spot. Is what I've been told true, that the weld can be as problematic as the crack? |
