Sorry for no new pics, my build has hit a slump, and time is killing me right now. I will have to bring it back home in a week or two finished or not. Lets hope time is my friend these next two weeks.
More pics to come as it moves on. There are alot of mods from Garfinkle Motorworks that have been done that I need to post. He reinforced my sway bar mounts and they are built like a tank now. Man did Mazda fail on that mount!

The stock sway bar mounts are horrible!!!! Mine were bent and cracked when I switched them out with my widefoot ones?

wow, has time gone by.
Well just to update everyone I got back on the car 3 days ago. Had everything back on and ready to load it up to take it to get tuned. Well sad story is that it tried to catch on fire - fuel circuit / wiring issue somewhere. Now to let the pros figure that out and fix it for me. Hope to be back up running soon................

Wow, this is impressive! I like the neatness of your build, and how you invested money in all the right components. Also, that turbo work must have cost you a kidney, right? I didn't even know it was possible to weld those turbos back up and machine them like that.

Update:
Took the car to Tweak It Racing in Symrna to have it finished. Dan and Brian have put alot of time into this car and have found the following issues wrong with her. 1.They found that the car had the o rings missing on the injectors and filled the motor up with fuel. Thats fixed.... 2.They found the wiring that tried to catch my car on fire. New coil harness, coils relocated back to the OEM spot and thats fixed...... 3. Now the turbos are shot. Primary is not boosting and secondary is blowing smoke from sitting in gas for 3 months. Hope soon to have the issues worked out and car back on the road.

Man I hate that for you. I was wondering what was going on with this build. Your car only had 38k on clock right? How did all this happen. Its good you moved your coils back to the stock location. Your mounting location was right next to your steering rack, which is about the worst place you could have put them. Besides you never hear of the FD having a problem burning out coils with the stock set up. I think someone was just trying to sell you something.
How did your turbos go out so quick? Your car is mostly stock right? Unless you run high boost the stock turbos are almost always good for 80 to 100k. I know hind sight is 20/20 but i think your biggest mistake was going that deep into a prestine FD to begin with. That and not having someone with you who is knowledgeable about FDs to help you out. Well I hope you get it all sorted out and start enjoying your 7 again. |

miles 38K miles stock. As for the coils, it had plenty of clearance from the rack and that was the least of my concerns. It was being under the FPR and the wire going to the TII coil done wrong that I was concerned with. Turbos were soaked in fuel for 2-3 months as the injector O-rings were missing which filled up the turbos and motor with gas. It was not a mistake to go into the car, the mistake was not just taking care of my true concern and just enjoying the car. As for not having some one with me, well I actually did but thats neither here nor there now.

ok, a few lessons learned!
What not to do!!!!! 1. Dont move the coils to the frame rail. Why not you ask? Well FD coils typically dont go out. Not only that but it was a directly under my FPR if it should have ever leaked fuel. Now if you dont have these issues or concerns then go ahead. 2. Dont upgrade to a T2 coil unless your very careful when splicing the wire. Mine was upgraded and the person who did the wiring grabbed a small shielding wire and crimped it into the hot lead. Over a short time it melted the wires and shorted them out within seconds of causing an engine fire. I was lucky that it was in the drive way with hood up or I woul dhave never seen the black/green smoke. 3. Dont run the stock belt on a air pump delete kit. It allows the pulley on the kit to barely rub the flexible intake tube causing a hole. make sure to go down to a smaller size. Over the last 2-3 months I have had to redo all the vacuum lines back to stock to try and trouble shoot all the small issues which should be fixed. Once I get a good set of turbos (looking into rebuilds) on the car I will hopefully be back up and running. I would be lost with out all the help of Dan and Brian at Tweak It Racing in Smyrna. They have found everything listed above, corrected it and have the car closer to being back on the road soon. Thanks Tweak It guys!!!!!!!!

Don, its posted back a few post.
When the motor was put back in the injectors did not get the O-rings somehow. Brought it back home and turned the key on to roll up the window. Well the Turbos filled up with fuel the couple of times I had to turn the key on and sat in it for 2-3 months. Also there were a few pluming issues with the turbo system that Tweak It had to track down over top of the wiring that tried to catch fire. To be honest, way too many issues that were overlooked in the begining some how and I just hope I can get it back on the road. Right now the cars faith is in the good hands of the guys at Tweak-It racing (Dan and Brian) who I owe alot!

oh boy, what a saga.
glad it "tried" to catch fire as opposed to actually catching fire ... would be sort of ironic given your screen name and all. in all seriousness though, i'm glad you caught all the issues at this stage - before catastrophe - and it seems to be a matter of time before you'll have it on the road again. good luck, Bro. |

Yes the lack of fire was truly only minutes away and with the car only having 38K miles I would have cried like a big baby. Being a firefighter it's not good to have our own stuff catch fire. Kinda looks suspicious. |

yeah, it's been a while since we were in touch. i'm glad to see things working out for you. hey, since your turbos were just sitting there when they went bad, they should be rebuildable, no? i mean it should just be a matter of new seals and such, right?

So it was Garfinkle's modified ignition harness that made your car catch on fire. I have a feeling thats how he burnt my FD down too. Its a tragedy that he has such a good reputation on here and people who actually know him would never let him come near there car. I learned this the hard way.
