Default 91 T2 Rescue - the story...

BigPimp'n acquired a gorgeous mint '91 T2 recently. The previous owner told him it would just cut off when driving after a few minutes. When BP drove it, he quickly learned it was going into LIMP mode. After taking it to a shop in NJ who couldn't repair it/figure out the problem, another friend w/ another T2 came by to swap misc parts trying to figure out which device was causing the issue.

When I learned of the issue, it was suggested that it was the MOP as is common on S5 cars. He brought the car to me and I was able to get a good MOP from one320fc and swapped it on. During the swap, I discovered that a rodent had made a rather LARGE home in the front of the car (during the time it has been sitting) so I removed the 10lbs of leave/twigs/berries to improve the cooling

After the MOP swap, it still had the LIMP mode. Checked the ECU and a conclusion was made that the MOP driver in the ECU had also failed. After researching options, it was decided to go ahead and upgrade the ECU with MOP delete and run premix from now on. Premix IMHO is safer anyway and the RTek has lots to offer.

The guys at RTek were quick and within a week they had the ECU fixed and returned for install.

I installed the new ECU - fired the car up and it's all better

Currently running a 100:1 ratio for gas, and although it was raining during the drive, its easy to say the car is MUCH more responsive and no more LIMP mode .. not to mention, no more FCD needed....

With the cost of stock ECUs and MOPs ever increasing, I really feel that the RTek is a great alternative. Its inexpensive and if you dont like premixing, you can get the earlier S4 mechanical MOP systems and swap them on (with the TP, etc)...

The final touch was a combination of clay bar, some rare german polish and a secret sauce I've had for years for waxing and the car's paint came around. It's not perfect, but looks good for a 15+ year old car.

The stats on this car is now:
1991 T2 all factory options (even has the lip, which isn't in these photos).
79K original miles, 3" exhaust and RTek 1.5. For a daily driver and all around fun car - it doesn't get much better! Not to mention, all the time and work takes another FC from the yard to the road. With '91s getting more rare by the year, I'm glad BP will have this one for years to come...

These are some of the other pics during the work.

The new ECU:

After all the exterior detailing... anybody coming to the show this Thursday in VA can see the car

The whole series of pics are now up in an album in my CP:

The 1.7 required larger injectors - this one is all stock fuel (minus the adjustments now made w/ the 1.5)
