I'll probably try it without first because I really don't want to buy a compressor/air gun. Well, I do kinda, but I really can't afford them...

i heard the new bushings go in easy and all thats really needed is a good rubber mallet, any truth to this?

Comparitvely I've purchased a 7.5hp 22cfm unit with a 60Gal horizontal tank at an auction of a shop that clsoed for $750 and considered it a great deal. That seems very fair for what you're getting.
