Default Mercury Marine coils now available!

Very excited to announce that we now have a source for the IGN and IGN-1A Mercury Marine ignition coils! AEM is rebadging these coils and offering them under their name. We'll have the IGN (no internal ignitor) and the IGN-1A (built-in ignitor) priced at $55 and $72 respectively. These coils are HOT! 103 mJ output compared with an M&W CDI's 115 mJ output!

I can attest to the stoutness of these coils. They surprised me on the dyno.

They have worked really well for me also.
Easy to mount them using the existing stock mounts too!

Pretty much any EMS. The IGN-1A has a built-in ignitor, so the stock ignitor is not needed. I've used these with Haltech and PFC with great results. I know they work with Microtech, Motec, and the PnP AEM. If you're using the universal AEM, with the built-in ignition driver, you'll need the standard IGN coil without the ignitor.

If you wanted to use them with a stock ECU and stock ignitor you'd probably not have real good results. The IGN coil draws some pretty serious amps and needs a high output ignitor to function properly.

So are you telling me I can run these straight with the haltech and without a CDI box? Sort of makes my $1200 autronic 500R useless!!!

I'm still running my stock fc coils in direct fire mode....

They come with crimp terminals (at least mine did... don't know if AEM is doing it the same way)

Breaking my "no posting on vacation" vow...

The IGN-1A will work with either Microtech or Haltech directly. Really any system that allows a falling edge output with programmable dwell control. No external ignitor needed. The Microtech X4 box is simply a fancy name for external ignitor. If you already have the X4 you may be able to run the standard IGN coil (no built-in ignitor), which is essentially the same coil but a little less expensive. However, the IGN coil needs an ignitor that is capable of supplying a large amount of current. The internal ignitor of the IGN-1A is rated for 19 amps. You'll need an ignitor with that kind of rating to allow the coil to work it's best and to ensure you don't burn down the ignitor itself. I know there is at least one guy on efi101.com that has used the IGN-1A with a Microtech system.

Ian, you can run these without a CDI box and get a similar amount of spark energy at the plug. The upside over CDI with the inductive coils is that you also get a longer duration spark. Win-win. If you have the Autronic, go ahead and run it. Otherwise, unless you're running over 30 psi of boost or perhaps straight methanol, these are the coils I'm recommending.

The coils will ship with a connector plug and pin set. The installer will need to crimp the terminals on the wires and assemble the connectors. If that's something you don't feel comfortable with, we can assemble a pigtail for you.

And the x4 box won't fit the bill for that
