Upgrading Springs/ shock Combo
Deciding on spring/ shock combo for the 90 FC GTUs. I like the stiff feel of the car. It feels really planted and turns where I tell it to go. im trying to decide either to go with the tanabe GF 265 or the racing beat springs. I do enjoy a nice cruise and spirited driving. Its also a DD. I was thinking of one of those and a set of tokico blues. Anyone have imput on this? I heard good things about these. whats your word?

go bilsteins! best affordable shock ever made. they are monotube, and rebuild/revalve is half the price of konis. other brands cant be revalved at all..
no input on springs..

Tockico Blues left me wanting more valving, car rode like crap.
I had a pair of Eibach springs and their rate was too soft for N/A power. Car UNDERsteered horribly with my right foot planted trying to exit a turn. I would go stiffer than Eibach. FWIW I have a good friend who is a suspension guru and tried desperately to talk me out of a set of Stance C/O's. When he got a ride in them he was pleasantly surprised at the ride quality. Running 7/5 springs and it's a little harsh but liveable

+1 on Bilsteins. I like the Eibach springs...nice ride, nice drop. I never felt the car understeer with the eibachs at all. I have them on the NA and TII. RB sways in the TII and Suspension techniques sways in the NA on KYB AGXs (both).

They were firm and good for auto-x but for cruising, especially with the shit roads we had, I found myself getting VERY angry..
I thought the rates in the Eibachs were too soft, especially in the rear. On hard accleration the car would squat enough that the front would lift enough to not let the tires really do thier thing. If you lifted and the car settled or nose dove slightly, traction in the front was restored. This was also on a shimmed S4 diff, I know that had alot to do the the propensity to understeer, but the fact that if you lifted the car would rotate, leads me to believe anyway, that a stiffer rear spring would have made a difference

Can't say I've auto-xed enough to experience that....the only times I've understeered have been coming in too hot or gunning it too early into a turn.

I dunno what a "tanabe GF 265" is, but the Tanabe GF210's are...ok.
Problem with these springs is that they are larger diameter than stock springs - this causes headaches when trying to go with wider tires and / or aftermarket wheels; stock wheels with stock sized tires should not pose a problem. Racing Beat springs are the common upgrade for street set-up's. Linear rates with a good price make them a popular choice. Tokico Blues set the standard for upgrade from stock for spirited driving. You can't go wrong with them for the price. (I have no idea why people are talking about "race" set-up's when the OP just wanted to upgrade their street car???" -Ted |

tokico Blues with Tanabe GF210's = Very stiff and nice drop, city driving does suck if roads are HORRIBLE. Not too bad if your roads are somewhat smooth.
Curious to see what RB sway bars will make it feel like roll wise??

I had Tanabe GF210's with KYB AGX(adjustable dampening) on my GTUs. It was very stiff when I wanted them to be. But, I have coilovers now and I won't go back to a spring strut combo.
Ted is right though about the GF210's being larger than stock. I ruined one of my front springs at a drift event because of tire rubbing on the spring and heating it up. I had aftermarket wheels on there.
