Sitting for a year: Your injectors and fuel system are most likely gummed up.
Drain and flush the tank and fuel lines, remove injectors and have them cleaned.

You should have had someone drive the car once a week while you were recovering!

Mine will have been sitting for 6 months when I get home (250 miles on the rebuild), hopefully I don't have the same issues!!!

Before you go to the trouble and expense of yanking the injectors, I'd put fresh gas in it, a NEW set of plugs and some BG or other quality fuel system cleaner and drive hell out of it. Get it up to full temp and keep it there. Maybe some highway, but go through at least a tank of gas and see if there's some improvement.

The off the shelf injector cleaners don't help much.

Although it's available in some parts stores (assume it's the same formulation as shops have) BG44k is not really an "off the shelf" cleaner. I've had two separate shops tell me it's effective. Both owner's opinions I trust. That's why I recommended it.
Anecdotally, I've also used Chevron/Techron stuff about twice a year since buying my car. About two years ago I sent my injectors in for cleaning and flow testing at 90k miles. IIRC I gained less than 2% from before to after on the bench.

Pulling the injectors is premature IMO.
