Cosmo 13B RE stationary gears in 13B

I've been told the Cosmo 13B RE stat gears are the same as 13B stat gears, but the 13B RE gears are hardened.

Is this true? I'm assuming the Cosmo gears use the same bearing?

iirc, S5 and up are hardened, and use same bearing

I didn't think S5 were hardened? I thought that's why 2nd gen owners made the jump to FD cause they are both hardened and have the newer bearing.

Thanks for the heads up....doesn't look like I need to be looking for Cosmo gears then. This is for a S5 rebuild. My bearings need replaced. If i can upgrade my gears with good used bearings at a reasonable cost I'll do it.

I will keep it simple...93 and newer are all the same...
Only stationary gears that i seen with failures are the older early 70s 12A or 13b..But very rare..

I'm not too worried about failure as I'm not building a high rev or high HP engine. I had read some threads about the FD having a newer style of bearing that I wouldn't mind using...but it's not a high priority.

I had come across some Cosmo gears for sale and gave that some thought. One of those had a new bearing the other did not. But for the money I'm better off replacing the bearings in the ones I already have.

Here are my 13B bearings. I had read if they are showing copper it's time to replace them.

Again lets destroy all fables once and for all.

We have all sorts of customers both prudent/cautious type and cheapo felipos. I have used bearings similar to yours in drag cars but using heavy synthetic blends (oil) and have done just fine, so the extra clearance and bronze showing is not an issue.

But if you plan to drive your car daily and dont want to take it apart after a few months be on the safe side and replace them.

Hope this information helps everyone out.

Copper bearing wear with rounded edges like the top pic isn't that bad...

I worry about copper bearing wear with sharp cut-off's like the bottom pic.
Guarans I would replace that...

Since I'm replacing bearings, might as well replace them both, right?

Only downside is that you gotta be extra careful on the break-in due to the new bearings.

Was helpful, I'm building it to be a daily driver...or at least I want it to be able to be relied on for that if needed.
