S5 Vs. S4 Vs. JDM TII tranny
ok, i have 2 spare TII trannys in my garage. and one in my 10AE. from what i have seen. there is no visual difference between s4 and s5 trannys. but you can tell by the mount if its on there. but that also could have been swappedsome time in the 15-20 years of its life. but i know gearing is slightly different between the 2 also.
but one of my spare TII trannys has a very noticable difference in appearence. when i bought it, they guy said it was from a swap he bought. i cant remember if he bought a JDM one or local one. so if it is in fact a JDM II tranny, is there any difference between it and the USDM one? i was told that JDM Fd trannys are stronger. but i dont know if that was true either... anyone have the answer here???

The 5th gear ratios are different.
Zenki FC3S turbo 5th gear = 0.862 Kouki FC3S turbo 5th gear = 0.819 BTW, the FD3S runs the same 5th gear ratio as the Kouki FC3S turbo. I don't know what you're trying to do, but the FC versus FD trans are totally different beasts. The dimensions are different, and they do not swap in terms of mounting. -Ted |

The FD3S trans isn't stronger.
Someone claimed different syncho set-up's, but I never got around to confirming this. They are basically the same thing. The clutch systems are different, therefore the different dimensions. Due to the push versus pull clutch systems, the input shafts and bell housings are different. -Ted |

i wasnt asking about the FD tranny. i just threw that in for reference. that the USDM and JDM might be different.
from the first post: "but one of my spare TII trannys has a very noticable difference in appearence. when i bought it, they guy said it was from a swap he bought. i cant remember if he bought a JDM one or local one. so if it is in fact a JDM II tranny, is there any difference between it and the USDM one? i was told that JDM Fd trannys are stronger. but i dont know if that was true either..." im wondering why one of my TII trannys look different than the others i have seen. from what i have seen and been told. there is no visual difference between a S4/S5 TII tranny. so what do i have?

I've seen one pic of a "smooth case" FC turbo trans that was off a J-spec, confirmed.
Is this what you're talking about? The internals are all supposed to be the same. -Ted |

This might be a weird question, but are there any differences between the series transmissions in the way they shift? Everytime I've driven an S4 compared to my S5, when shifting it's more notchy, like it takes longer to shift. S5's have always been smooth and shift quicker. Maybe its all in my head, but its something I've noticed.

also the fifth gear ratio will change depending on the market. Japan, USA, and Europe (mostly UK) all had a different fifth gear. Ill try too look up what they were.
i also believe there was some minor changes to the shifter linkage systems on the S5 from the S4. Again ill try to confirm what and when.

Hi, I just wanted to ask about convertible transmissions in here...
now, I know that the USDM automatic convertibles have a 3.9 rear end. Do the manual ones have the 3.9 as well or no?
