Good thread,
Is it just me? or do Mazda people not give a shit about this kind of performance testing I have been using Race Logic VBOX3 and 3i for years and developed more applicable testing standards that many can do with minimal "risk" (90-140kmh 3rd gear tests) ideal for our cars (any Mazda fitted with OEM 5 speed turbo box). Much more interesting as it shows up many more things like usable power band of the engine (typically ~4000rpm to ~8000rpm) and gets rid of variables like shifting times etc, good to even show chassis ability to transfer power if you are exceeding practical limits of 2wd and street tires, not to mention real world power test! not artificial dyno test... Have a read of my data I have collected here > http://www.riceracing.com.au/vbox-ii...ing-tuning.htm Once you do allot of this work you quickly see what the real benefit of a good spread of power is v's a dyno queen set up, not to mention things like the chassis being able to use the power you have too. I still find it amazing people are so backwards in their understanding of how cars work and using proper tests to quantify it all. At least people have started to use proper instruments to "test" with.

So he goes from 60-130 about twice as fast as I go 0-60... ridiculous.

Everyone should go out and buy a Racelogic Performance box (entry level unit) as used in that competition, they are a great tool, invaluable in setting up your car and actually measuring what it will do on the road.
I said before, it seems that mazda rotary people are the only ones who just don't get it when it comes to this kind of thing, either they seem to be too poor or too ignorant/opinionated about this kind of thing? On that 6speed forum and many others people gag over these kinds of tests and every man and his dog has one of these meters to test their cars basically each time they drive them best thing about them is you can compare yourself to all the other real sports cars out there (factory supercars) as pretty much any decent magazine or on-line based rag who reviews cars uses the same equipment. GET OUT THERE AND BUY ONE AND TEST! Lets get our own list of cars happening and show these cunts how good the rotary can be

Same thing can be accomplished with an ECU with datalogging, a wheel speed sensor and an accelerometer. I just don't have the accelerometer. I do agree though... real world testing is paramount.

^ No official certifiable speed measure, no slope measure (incline decline), so its open to abuse from users (intentional or not) thus I would not accept any "measures" done by this method.

Datalogs So if I gave you the seconds it took of a datalog of a 3rd gear run from say 4-8k and the weight of my car you could get a hp?

*Pitch factor (varies across power curve as chassis squats) not just a general offset like some rubbish meters use lol based on acel only data measures. *Weight *Slope *Rolling resistance *Intertia *Air resistance If you give me all those I can work it out for you. The first is the biggest problem with using an accelarometer! I only use an accelarometer as a correction for noisey GPS derived acceleration as its not effected by vehicle pitch. The other stuff I can make an assumption for but its best to do a coast down test on each specific vehicle. It is complex, I list the formula I developed myself on my own web site. I can measure power far better than what even RL offer as a token feature on their own Performance Box but you need to know what you are doing. I have a friend in Europe who uses a Pectel with some extra inputs to do similar to what I can but its just nota as good for the factors I described above. For anyone buying a performacne box I can give you the forumla for a nominal fee and teach you haw to use it its a very handy thing to have to monitor the power of your car over a race or in real world, even on 10hz data its still a very usefull tool.

For what it does, it's really not that bad. Watch Supercars on Speed Monday night at 10 or 11. It's what they use for their head to head comps.
