Main pulley bolt washer question
When taking apart my engine I don't recall there being a separate copper washer underneath the main pulley bolt. I'm gathering the last few pieces needed for my rebuild and I'm trying to figure out if I need a washer or not. Below is my main pulley bolt as it is now:
There appears to be a copper washer staked in place. Is this the washer in question or is there another one that goes on top? I don't recall any instructions to stake the washer in place. I've half-heartedly tried to pry it off with no success. |

Yes, that is the copper washer staked in place.
Yes, it'll pry off given enough force. Mazda recommends to replace it every time you remove it. In a pinch, we just reanneal the copper washer if you don't have a replacement handy. -Ted |

Thanks for the clarification. I couldn't find any reference to the washer being staked anywhere. I have no problem replacing it considering it's probably the original that came with the car. Should I hold onto this one to use when checking endplay so I don't crush the new washer prematurely?

If you're going to follow the Mazda procedure to check end-play, then there is no problem reusing the old one to do so.
Yes, it makes sense not to "crush" a new copper washer just for the end-play checking procedure. -Ted |
