Default How much oil for the shifter resovoir? (pic)

Does oil just belong in the small area where the ball sits or is it supposed to be more than that? Also what type of oil? Does it make its way into the transmiission or is this area sealed in some way?

What type of oil is the best for this area? My notes say tranny oil, but I'm not sure if this resovoir is all by itself or somehow intersects with the tranny. Don't want to mess anything up. Plus -- is tranny oil the same thing as automatic transmission fluid or is it a regular oil?

Whatever you are using in the tranny is fine. Most say Redline or Amsoil.
I went to Pep Boys and they didn't have the Red Line, but they had a couple of gear oils in the same viscosity, the one I got was labeled as a synchro type oil.
Put it in up to the level and the shifts are pretty smooth. Probably doesn't make as much difference as changing the tranny to a synthetic, but it does help.

Liberally grease the ball pivot and lower bushing too.

I would replace it with a new one while the shifter is out, if you are installing a new shifter/short shifter. I think someone makes an upgraded one, but OEM works just fine.

I think the FSM specifies grease on the lower pivot-bushing as well as the main ball pivot. Someone once suggested marine grease as it might adhere better in the gear oil bath. I've never tried it, but it couldn't hurt.
