FSM Switch Terminology Question
Hi all,
I'm looking at wiring diagrams and a cluster switch for a '89 w/o airbags. Each connection has it's acronym or abbreviation for it's purpose. What does 'E' mean? More importantly what does '(E)' mean? I guess the single E means electricity - but I don't know what the brackets mean. My slot with the '(E)', is open and nothing is connected. Thanks in advance. |

That's defining what harness the circuit is a part of. E is emissions, F is front, etc.

Still Wondering about (E) pin
Hi, thanks for the reply, but in this case it may mean something else. It is part of the Headlight/Dimmer/signal switch combo on a '89. I am more curious what the parenthesis around the E mean. All other pins have various letter..eg 'IL' - illum maybe, and SL, SR, etc. The only one different looks like (E).

If this is what you're referring to, what is circled in red, then it's as I'm telling you. Perhaps a screenshot of your own, showing what you're talking about, would help.

Hi, thanks for that. I'm sorry, I said 'wiring' when meant that I was referring to a wiring diagram from the Factory Service Manual. I will send pic so you know what I mean. Sending same thing twice in case one pic is too small. I have marked red arrows to a couple of questions I had. The 'E' in parenthesis and two pins that are each labeled 'SL'. If you know what these are, and even the other codes, that would be fantastic,
Thanks again. Mike Last edited by Islandplans; 11-01-2015 at 01:49 AM.. |

Copied it to a large format for you, so everyone can see what you are talking about.
I don't know what the abbreviations stand for either, but on the 91 wiring diagram it shows "E" going to chassis ground. I would imagine that "(E)" would be an alternate for the same thing. I don't know this for a fact however. 89_91ClusterSwitch by Kevin Frank, on Flickr

That's not an FSM. Google the FSM, download it, and I can help you.

GySgtFrank - thank you for copying that in large size. I'm new here and do not know how to do that.
C. Ludwig - I see the same diagram he and I posted in the Factory Service Manual. At least that is what it is called on the following site where I downloaded it from. Maybe it links to an incorrect document? I don't know for certain. http://wright-here.net/cars/rx7/manuals.html Last edited by Islandplans; 11-02-2015 at 01:11 AM.. Reason: typo |

Your using the Hayes manual link. Download this link from that site. It's the true factory manual, not a Hayes aftermarket. The true factory manual will have nomenclature more people can understand.

He's referencing Section T, pages 22-23 in the FSM, which I guess is also copied in the Haynes Manual. From what I've found, Gunny is correct, "E" is ground. I assume "E" stands for "Earth," which is another way to refer to ground that appears to be popular in Japanese literature.
To C. Ludwig's point the "(x)" listed next to wire colors designates the harness or sub-harness that wire is part of. "(E)" being the emissions harness. |

I looked at the three dimmer switches in the wiring document and they all look exactly the same. None match what I have - that's where my confusion is.
I don't know how to make those photos bigger, but they are pages Z59, Z60 and Z66. Last edited by Islandplans; 11-03-2015 at 01:26 AM.. Reason: Add pages |

Do you still have the original '89 sub-harness to reference? Last edited by infernosg; 11-03-2015 at 08:17 AM.. |

I have the actual 89 manual here. I'll try to get it scanned for you.
