Need some urgent advise!
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased my first rx7 last week off a friend. It had been sitting for 6-8months unstarted, unrun. I put jump leads on it and it fired up no problem, i drove it home with no hiccups but did notice when i was almost home the cat heat light shown. The last time the car was run before i got it was in the rain where it cut out and the cat heat light appeared, the car was towed home and started the next again morning, first time. I now have the car at my house, but it will not start for me! I have recorded a small video to show what happens exactly. Sometimes the cat heat light will show with ignition on and it will try to start. Other times the light has not shown but ive heard a constant ticking from under the throttle bodies. Ive removed the spark plugs and cleaned them up, the car is getting fuel, it just doesnt seem to want to start. Any ideas? Andy. http://youtu.be/0HQtIonrQHg |

Andrew, I'm no expert on FDs, but there are some basic things to try first. You may have already done them, if so, ignore me. Is the fuel in the tank the same fuel that has been in there the whole 6-8 months it was sitting? If so, drain the fuel and replace it with new, modern fuel blends do not last long in storage. Have you checked all your grounding points? Especially for the ECU, CPU (harness ground?), and starter. A little corrosion here will really screw things up. Check to ensure you're getting full voltage from the battery to the ECU, injectors, and coils. I believe 12.7 volts? You'll have to check the FSM on the proper voltage. Hopefully someone with experience on the FDs can better answer this.

Thank you for getting back to me! The fuel that is in it, is the fuel that has sat with it for 6months yes. I will replace that, I have noticed a slight fuel leak though from somewhere I cant see exactly, near the manifold downpipe. I am going to have to strip back the engine bay to find it. I will check all those ground points also. Ive never seen a car with as many! Apparently it has had a different upgraded fuel pump added to it after its last tune. Will that make a different? I think the new pump may have higher pressure.

If those suggestions don't work, it may be a leaky fuel injector. If you have fuel coming from the downpipe you have flooding issues. This is normally caused by a fuel injector that is not shutting down. You will have to pull the injector rails (there are two of them) lay out the injectors and run the pump. This will make it obvious if an injector is leaking fuel. It is a relatively common problem from what I have read on others posts. Come on FD guys jump in and help.

Fuel injectors are sticking and the fuel reg or PD is leaking.... or the o-ring in the primary fuel rail.
Basically, you need to remove the upper intake mani and replace everything underneath it.... I would definately do a vac hose job while you're in there.
