Removing the power steering
If you know the series I will be racing this car in, you know I can not spend a great deal of money, so...
I have been told that I can remove the power steering pump, belt and the hoses, then connect the two pipes on the box together to keep any pressure differences to a minimum and I can run this way forever. Currently the pump is crap and leaks like crazy anyway. I like the feel of the steering without the pump, but yes it is a little stiff at low or no speed. Opinions?? |

Personally, I would remove it.
It will not cost you anything to get rid of it, so it fits the budget. You will be freeing up power with one less belt taxing your engine, and you will be marginally lighter without the pump. I'd say it's an all win scenario without power-steering. And just think how ripped your arms are going to be after countless hours on the track with the good 'ol armstrong steering. Bonus points with the ladies

If you wanted to get fancy, you could swap an FC front suspension under it and depower the rack according to Titanium TT's post in the second gen archives.

Done, seems to work great. Some one gave me another tip, loop the two sides of the steering box together to keep the pressure equalized on both sides. I cut the lower hose at the pump, removed the hose around the fitting at the top of the steering box and attached the lower hose to the top fitting with a hose clamp.
Took me a while to find and remove the hidden center nut on the steering pump bracket. The pump was actually frozen and the pulley shaft was broken. Last edited by magpiemini; 04-09-2012 at 11:14 AM.. |
