Brake Fluid
Well I used Valvoline in the last 8 and in my other FB - but looking around these days and preparing for the gap next weekend I want to put a really good fluid in. One that can take the steep incline and harder corners of the gap.
What are your preferences in the fluids or is your state of mind the same as mine generally is - which is it doesnt really matter so long as you change it regularly?? I changed my FC's brake fluid every 10K miles... |

I'm partial to Motul mainly cuz that's what our race team uses...but really any DOT 4 fluid would be fine up there. There really isn't that much hard braking up there, especially now with all the traffic and the POPO!

Ah - I've never been, so I just wanted to be sure I'm prepared.
I will still go with a better than OE fluid though. OG Racing is a speed shop near me that carries lots of good brands.. I can AP550 pretty cheap! I wasnt sure if I needed to go higher boiling point, but it sounds like I'll be ok, the grade of most of the curves doesn't look bad if I'm only taking them at 55mph or less. Thanks! I have often used the Valvoline Sythetic stuff that you find at most local auto parts stores. Works quite well. I recently switched to the ATE Super Blue. I haven't noticed a difference.

The super blue is what I used in my FC from time to time, it makes it easier to tell when all your fluid is flushed.
Optimally, you should switch between blue and gold every flush, just makes life easier - but its not always on hand... |

I got the fluid today - its now AP551. Of course I hit up OG Racing on an open house day so all the porsche club guys are there, lol.. oh well. My buddy went with the AP600 for his 8 as he actually auto-x his regularly, where mine just sees heavy street use and maybe the occasional auto-x...

Oh - I should note that the AP551 is DOT3 though, not DOT4 as our systems recommend. However, the dry boil point is 257C, or 527F degrees which is much higher than the 446F required to be DOT4 and the 518F to be DOT5.1, so its completely safe (and it is NOT silicon based BTW). Wet boil is what makes it DOT3 and really, who cares about WET boil if you change the brake fluid often enough...
