Cup holder in progress
So tired of holding my drinks in my lap and so far not having seen any other decent cup holder options I have decided to embark on my own fabrication. First off let me state that this really isn't a viable option for someone with power mirrors unless you move the mirror switch. Or just adjust them then unplug the switch. I have non power aero mirrors so I decided to get rid of the switch.
I then traced the whole rectangle piece onto a piece of aluminum I had, moved the square where the security light clips in up further and this is what I have so far. My next step will be to take some measurements and get a general drink size whole cut out on the bigger lower portion of the new plate. Then take another larger cup or something of that sort and cut the bottom portion off and affix to the bottom of the plate. So the hole isn't just open to under the center console. I also plan to line the top edge of holder with foam or something of that sort so it can hold a variety of drink sizes snug. My other worry is that I might need to build up higher from the top of the plate if this turns out to be to shallow if just made level with the plate. I don't think that area will be deep enough to securely hold a drink

Just emphasising that I feel it won't be deep enough. What's the test? Take a few hard turns and wait to see if some sticky stinky soda gets spilled and soaks into the carpet, electronics, and seats? I'd build it up from the start.

I do plan to make some sort of arms or fingers to grip the drink, like so,
But yes I do think I will cut a few more layers of aluminum into squares and cut progressively bigger holes in them as the layers go up Last edited by Rx-7fetish; 03-01-2011 at 01:48 PM.. |

i already own the aluminum in small enough chunks that its not really useful for much else, also no money for the glass. im just doin a prototype i guess you could say, your welcome to use whatever material to see fit. Also i thought of the raised ring but decided against it due to my elbow being in the area when there is no drink, i dont want to break it off, plus i think maybe a quarter to a half inch thinker just around the cup holder area would be more aesthetically pleasing. this will all also be getting painted black, or grey, not sure yet.

Why not build a second ring that's raised over the panel for extra security? That + grips in the hole should provide for a semi-secure fit.
