Cold air box for side draft
I've seen many years ago on the evil forum an air box someone fabricated. The car was a 2nd gen with the standard RB sidedraft setup. Dell or Web or whatever as the carb. They Built an aluminum box around the carb with the top open. The top was positioned so that when using a TII hood it was sealed from the engine compartment. Only drew air in thru the hood scoop.
Does anybody have a pic like that? Would the hood scoop location be effective in that setup? Any thoughts are appreciated. |

A little different situation for me. I am going to try to fabricate some kind of duct from the high beam lamp on my Cosmo to the Weber sidedraft I have. Temporary, so I can take take the headlamp out, or leave it in.

I've been contemplating doing this for my Dell. I'm thinking if I take some
sheet AL and wrap it up to the shape of the RB air filter that came with the Dell I could then connect a tube into it and route to the front of the radiator using one of those ReSpeed radiator supports with the standard size 3" coupler to hook the tube up on one side and the cone filter on the other. I was thinking I could do the tube with regular 3" PVC or maybe 2". Not sure if the PVC can hold up to the heat it may encounter tho. Anyone know the melting point of PVC or the correct PVC to use? I know it would help in the summer just based on how well the car runs in the cooler weather now.

I have seen people use high temp dryer vent tubes on E30 BMW's.

Yeah I've seen that used to but I don't like how it looks too much. It works
tho. I'm thinking black PVC maybe. Since I'm cheap I don't want to use the AL tube and silicone joints like you see on turbo intercoolers and such. Plus theres not that much pressure anyway.

Here is the link to the ducting I used for my CAI. I have a ReSpeed radiator support with a 3" OD opening. The ducting runs up to my stock 1st gen air cleaner. I am running a Nikki carb. This stuff is designed for this purpose. I would stay away from matalic boxes and ducting. It will absorb heat and warm the air on the way in. There are all kinds of options for down draft carbs, but I have never seen a solution for a side draft. |

You can find boxes made for sidedrafts but they usually are for dual sidedrafts
like you find on Alfas and LBC. Mike, that hose you posted looks like a good solution.

Doesn't have to be this brand, but I've seen these before. Someone makes one with and aluminum air funnel that looks like a velocity stack, and if all black this would look acceptable.

here are some pics of a fresh air intake i made for a downdraft. the headlight cover was welded partially open to help direct the air to the filter. we chose to do this as in his class no body mods were allowed...i have made some for a sidedraft but i cant find the pics. on the sidedraft intakes i made we re-located the alternator to get the correct length tube.. the velocity stacks were used in all the fresh air tubes.
fyi ,these make a 5 hp gain on the dyno, and more at the track at high speed

Thanks for the pics and info guys. I appreciate it greatly. But........
Still no pics utilizing the TII scoop as the intake. I'll do some basic drawings and post them. My biggest obstacle will be making the box the proper height and orienting it to line up with the rubber molding on the bottom side of the hood scoop. Trial and error will work but takes longer and might render a box useless and require starting over. Not really a big deal but still would be nice to have some basic dimensions to start with. |
