air intake ques?

I have an 85 GS that I bought last fall. I recently did alot of mechanical and some modding to get it running in tip top shape. My buddy said he will cut in a hood scoop and mig weld the air cleaner box so that it lines up with the hood scoop so fresh air can be pushed into the engine. Has anyone ever did this to their cars. I'm thinking it will be like a cold air intake on fuel injected cars. Does this sound like a good idea?

Is there going to be some type of baffle designed to control the elements? My concern would be excess moisture if/when there is precipitation.

Good idea, I will have to run that by him and see what he says. Thanks for the concern about that issue. Its something I am gonna be doing in the next month or so. So its just in the planning stages now. I figured it would be best to get some feedback ahead of time.

85rx-7gsl-se has added one to his 1st gen, although I am unsure whether it was for the intercooler or a direct feed to the turbo. Hell I cant even remember how it was designed, what good am I lol

it will probably look terrible why not just actually run a pipe up to the front where you can't see it still, though I really don't think there is an actual power gain you can notice from this

Easier and cleaner would be to just run a hose from the air cleaner to the upper Right side radiator side panel. Refinement of 12arotary suggestion.

Really not going to be much of any performance gain if you are in a cooler climate with a stock street driver.

There are a lot of problems associated with the design of a proper "ram air" system, which is essentially what you are talking about. Number one problem is that they tend to create so much turbulence that they actually result in a decrease in performance.

A standard cold air intake (CAI) is most likely the way to go. Take a look over at www.re-speed.com and check out their modified radiator mount. This comes with an opening designed to be used in conjunction with a CAI system. They are also working on an air cleaner housing that has many improvements, along with being CAI friendly.
