Deals Gap Rotary Rally? DGRR
Deals Gap Rotary Rally (DGRR) is one of the most anticipated rotary gatherings. Located in the foothills of Fontana, NC.
2010 is looking to be a record number turnout with over 200+ registered in participation. Deals Gap is a popular and internationally famous destination for driving enthusiasts (of motorcycles and sports cars), as it is located along a stretch of two-lane road known as "The Dragon" or the "Tail of the Dragon". The 11-mile stretch of the Dragon in Tennessee is said to have 318 curves. Some of the Dragon's sharpest curves have names like Copperhead Corner, Hog Pen Bend, Wheelie Hell, Killboy (formerly Shade Tree) Corner, Mud Corner, Sunset Corner, Gravity Cavity, Beginner's End, and Brake or Bust Bend. The road earned its name from its curves being said to resemble a dragon's tail. The stretch bears the street name "Tapoco Road" in North Carolina and "Calderwood Highway" in Tennessee and is signed entirely by U.S. 129. State Route 115 is included on maps, and is the name used by Tennessee Department of Transportation for highway contracts. Since part of the road is also the southwestern border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there is no development along the 11-mile stretch, resulting in no danger of vehicles pulling out in front of those in the right of way. It mostly travels through forested area and there are a few scenic overlooks and pull-off points along the route. The speed limit on the Dragon was 55 mph prior to 1992; it was reduced to 30mph in 2005. DGRR, imo:
I love seeing: lots of rotary powered cars all in one place all the different models in one place really nicely built cars different engine / interior setups I love hearing the purring, braping, screaming, an backfires of rotary engines. I love driving on the "tail of the dragon", the relentless switchback g's you get when driving through the 300+ curves. I love the scenery. My DGRR experiences: On my 1st trip, the 1st night, me an some buddy's went for a night run. It previously rained that day so the road was wet. I decided to go as passenger with one. There ended up being a bunch of frogs just sitting in the road. We must of ran over hundred frogs that night. By the end of the run I was sick. The rest of the weekend I was just amazed I guess, awesome event, defiantly returning. On my 2nd time up there I won a prize, an oil filter pedestal, yay! On my 3rd time up there I spun out(wtf) on a left-hand curve while getting away from an annoying tailgating lexis is300 but remained unscathed. Ive taken the same car up there all these years, '89 GTU. This will be my 4th time up there, I'm looking forward to it.
