Rallycross!

I know I'm likely to catch a bit of flaming, but I went rallycrossing today in my GSL-SE. I gotta say, flogging a car on dirt, grass and gravel, while also dodging cones, was a totally new experience for me. Certainly gave new meaning to "airing it out", as there were a few times when the car didn't have any contact with the ground. Sideways and airborn at the same time can be pretty interesting....
Pretty much a stock SE chassis and engine, other than the RB header, intake and edelbrock 600 carb, along with the GM HEI X3 ignition mod and e-fan.
Overall, the car finished 3rd and 5th in prepared rear wheel drive (PR) class against a couple of well prepped miata's on snow tires with experienced rallycross drivers, while me and my co-driver were total noobs, and running all season tires (Falken ZE-512's). I'm pretty sure the 2 year old gas wasn't helping much either.....

Anyone else tried rallycross?
I've been running my 12a car in CSP autocross for a few years (2007-2010 CSP regional champion) and wanted to give this a try. What a hoot. All that was missing was the rebel flag on the roof and the dixie playing horn..........

I just started this yr (2010), only made 4 events. right out of the door, either my codriver or myself have podiumed every race in stock awd with his 96 impreza outback. rallycross is definately more driver and less car than autox is, and thats why im officially hooked lol.
he just picked up an impreza coupe, so we're prepping it for PA or M4 (not sure, didnt read rules). basically just gonna completely gut it, steering quicker (a must have!!!), clutch diff in rear, possibly weld center (we'll see) and run a stock 2.2. gonna be one heck of a challenge battling 400hp evos in this thing lol. we're gonna try to get it done with superduper handling over shitty surfaces. its reaallly easy for big power guys to screw up in dirt/mud

heres a vid from one of ours. this was a new lot up in BFE washington thats pretty small. our usual spot in portland is about twice the acreage and much rougher. we routinely get tires off the ground...

I tried this once, but the course was so rough that I just couldn't stand to put my baby through it. After two of my six runs, I packed it in and went home. But when I say the course was rough, I really mean it! Several cars blew the bead on tires, one flipped and rolled, numerous mechanical failures, etc. Might have well been doing a crash derby.

I'd like to try it again sometime, but only on a good course, and maybe with a "disposable" car.

Glad you had a good time with it...

This event was put together pretty quickly (just under a month) and the course was a bit rough. There were a couple cars that failed to finish the day. One with engine proplems, one busted radiator, and one bead popped loose.
The busted radiator was in a car that had been bought for $100, at a salvage yard.
Engine problem was pretty clear to everyone before the event started, so it wasn't a big surprise.
The bead popping was on a subie, and really needed a bit more PSI to begin with.

I gotta say, after having run this event, I will be doing more in the future, but it's understood that the piece of land used yesterday was too rough for future use.
Even at that, this car didn't bottom out any harder than my street car did on the highway, before I converted to GC coilovers. Heck, the rear bumpstops don't even appear to have seen much action. The front's did, but with over 200K miles on stock springs, they're a bit saggy.

Here's a teaser video from the action, just ignore the part where I take out a couple cones in the ol' primer SE......
Our local videographer was on hand for the day, and hasn't finished the final film.

teh rallyx cross i started here is actually quite a bit more exciting that standard locations. mostly due to idaho being a bit place. Hell we even had a roll over once (slow but still). Couple two wheeling moments for some. I arranged an additional site for this season so we can run the two venues and give people diversity on surfaces, as the one is gravel and other is silt

A buddy of mine did it for a few years with a pretty well built 90s Civic SI, Tires are a big big upgrade for the buck...Tirerack has some no name cheap mud/snow tires for dirt cheap on his civic they were about $40 a tire. Its a blast I did a ton of ride alongs!! Not sure about the GSL-SE but his front end took a shit a few times even with koni coilovers, tie rods and other various parts needed to be replaced. Have fun!!

Ha - thats an old pic.. I'm riding shotgun in that shot...

The rallyx in our area basically got bumped out as the venue started cutting back and we all just fell away from it. I'm sure they still run a few events out there, but its not near as popular as it was a few years back.
