Started the car for the first time!!
For those who don't know. I bought this car for $400.00 in May, it's an '85 base model. I've been working on it as time and money allows. During this time period I've acquired a used tank, Carter fuel pump, Holley FPR and several other things.
It Lives!!!!! Kinda. Last weekend I finally decided to rebuild the carb. Got done rebuilding it at 11:30 Sunday night. I had pool league on Monday and dart league on Tuesday so I couldn't get into anything too time consuming. Yesterday I went ahead and got the carb back in. It started on the second try. Settled in at ~1900 and almost smooth. Then I noticed a huge fuel leak on the fuel rail. I forgot to tighten up the bolts after replacing the crush washers. Got it fired up again and it was fine till the choke cut off then it stalled. It didn't slow down on the way to 0. There was some smoke in the engine compartment which I figured was debris from the tree it was parked under as there were twigs and dried leaves in the heat shield at the exhaust manifold. The I noticed that I had not hooked up the OMP lever. It was too hot to mess with it so I decided to leave it for today. Today I got the OMP lever hooked up and found a connector to a solenoid that connects to the altitude compensator. Started up with a couple of pumps of the gas pedal and still the same. It stalls when the choke shuts off. The motor isn't smooth running which is a concern along with the fact that the oil pressure starts up good and then keeps going down until 0. I checked the oil dipstick and the oil looks too clean. I changed the oil last month in preparation for getting it started but it should still show a little dirty. The oil filter is warm to the touch so it could be circulating some oil just not constantly. So it looks like I'll have the following to do: 1. Get the idle sorted(I didn't even take the idle screw out while rebuilding the carb. I did it after the carb was put together and I used some compressed air in the circuit and it was blowing through). 2. drop some seafoam to get the carbon stuff out and hopefully smooth things out though I might do some oil first to see if it's a lubrication problem. 3. figure out if the oil pump is working or if there is a problem with the sensor. 4. fix the oil leak at the OMP. Here are about 125 pics of the carb removal and rebuild including the set up I used on the table to keep all the parts sorted out. http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l1...arb%20Rebuild/ |
