Oil pan sealing. Stripped bolt holes
I'm at the point in my build that I'm installing the oil pan. I have a brand new Mazda oil pan and a Garfinkle oil pan brace I'm installing. I made my first attempt tonight, and I made the mistake of not cleaning out the bolt holes with a tap first and ended up stripping a few of the bolt holes (good thing I didn't crack the housings). I'm going to try to put a helicoil in those holes. What are the bolt sizes that they use? Is it a M6x1.00? I'm thinking about also using a Moroso stud kit instead of the bolts included in the Garfinkle brace kit.

They are m6 x 1.0. Helicoils are fine, just make sure you thread them in enough so that part of the coil does not stick up past the oil pan mating surface. I always run a tap first because the built up silicone and grime causes the bolts to easily strip. I also used the Moroso stud kits will good results. Make sure you lay the pan and brace on first, then screw in the studs.

Remember that the torque value for these is very low at 74-104 inch pounds!
I suggest a medium value. So many people have stripped this size fastener on their engines. |

To update: I got the oil pan sealed and all of the bolt holes are in good condition. I ran a tap through each hole, and pulled out a nice amount of old silicone. Since the bolts only go down about halfway through each hole, only the upper half of 3 holes were stripped. So with the Moroso stud kit installed, none of those were an issue (luckily, those 3 weren't through-holes).
