I bought my RX7 in 1997 and it is the only car I have owned that I didn’t get tired of in a year. How I came about buying it is kind of a funny store. I had a Porsche Boxster on order and waited nearly 6 months for it to come in, I did have a stipulation in the contract that I had to be able to fit in the car. Well at 6’4” I was a tad to big to fit so I walked away, crushed that I couldn’t fit. I went and looked at several other sports cars that day and basically had the same problem. After I gave up my wife asked me to take her to the store to buy a couch. Across from the furniture store was a 93 BB base RX7 sitting out in the grass in front of the dealership. It was love at first sight, but I was sure I wasn’t going to fit. After we bought the couch I dragged my wife across the street and took it for a test drive. Two amazing things happen, I fit and she loved the 7 also!! Needless to say I drove her home that same day.

I honestly really never appreciated what the Mazda engineers accomplished with the RX7 until I started Autocrossing it in 2000. Since then she has gone through many modifications and is currently being prepared to run in Street Mod 2 for the 2008 season.

The engine build up this year is a bit on the different side then what most people do. My goal is not max horsepower, but max low end torque. Because of the unique configuration of the build I will be doing a couple of right ups for the forums to share what I have learned in the process. It still amazes me how much misinformation is out there about our cars and upgrades and how it gets regurgitated over and over again. So I hope to dispel a few that are circulating with my write ups.

Here are a couple of thoughts that will give you an idea of who I am:

I am anal when it comes to my car
I’m kind of old school in thinking, but I also like to push the bubble and love new technology.
I think that anyone who opens the intake and exhaust on a Third gen and still runs the stock computer is an idiot. NO EXCEPTIONS!
I have never had a motor I built and tuned throw an apex seal (knock on wood)
I am one of the few that thinks there is nothing wrong with the rotary’s reliability. 98% of the problems are created by the owner, tuner or their mechanic’s lack of knowledge.
The 3rd gen is one of the sexiest cars ever made.
I prefer cake over pie!

Dan

I agree 100%. I've put around 40,000 miles on the engine in my red car without issue. I also have been daily driving it for the last 3 months and have managed to rack up around 10,000miles.

I think there was a guy with the user name Spank or something like that on the other forum that had impressive torque numbers and low end response. I think he also ran SM2. Just thought I'd throw it out there in case you wanted something to research.

Yes, I know Allan, lent him my rain tires at the Nationals a few years back. I've done my research, just waiting for the rotating assembly to come back from being balanced so I can build the motor.

My girlfriend asked me why I like my car today. I told her I love how finicky it is, and having something to do, like working on it all the time, makes me happy. My FD was meant for me as well. Welcome to the boards!
