well they hold up better to the heat (I'm sure you saw some brittle lines during your teardown), are self lubricating, less likely to kink and doesn't tear as easily. The oil and gas tolerance is an issue but you really should try to keep your engine bay clean. If you are getting oil on the lines then you need to find the leak before the motor dies (same applies to the gas).
As far as the rice-a-roni look? I was planning on using multiple colors so others could see where the emissions vacuum lines are, along with the turbo, manifold and other engine lines.
I can save a few bucks but I've learned that cheaping out doesn't pan out for me. I end up replacing the same thing multiple times.
