Welcome to the club, Phil! I would say you are getting good advice on the care and feeding of a rotary - You really need to wind them up to keep them healthy. I had a 1988 RX-7 w/automatic for 12 years, took it to redline regularly and never had a problem. I am now treating my '07 RX-8 to the same healthy exercise. Also, one of the longest lived third gen cars I have ever come across was owned by a fellow who took the thing to track events on a regular basis and flogged the bejeesus out of it. On the other hand, I have heard numerous accounts from rotary mechanics over the years of cars that had been "babied" and died prematurely. So it seems, when driving a rotary, the best thing to do is let 'er eat all she wants.
