pilot bearing from hell
 

hi everyone i need help taking out the race from the pilot bearing on a 12a i bought the motor locally and there was no pilot bearing in it just the race i have tried so many things i just wanna my rotary right by having everything in tip top shape if anyone can help i am at my wits end

carbid bit and score the race. Take enough material out so you can just pop it out because the race will deform/crack and come out easy.

I spent two days trying to get a pilot bearing out of a 13B, eventually just hit it with the carbide bit and two seconds later the race was out.

im gonna try that i have this tool that creates pressure in the back of the race to pop it out but it is taking so long i was also wondering it woulnt matter if the flywheel is off right idk im just trying to think of solutions right now

doesn't matter if the fly wheel is off or not. Just be careful using the carbide bit. You don't want to damage the eccentric shaft. That would be an expensive mistake

Punch and a hammer to collapse it in on itself.

At work I'll weld a bolt to it, and use the slide hammer to pop em out. Just have to be careful not to let the weld puddle wet into the crank. Usually it's pretty tough to weld the crank when you're aiming at something else. Doesn't tend to have enough heat to fuse.

If you can not find a rotary shop around you that will rent you the puller or pull it for you Atkins Dan has what you need. Save you a lot of time, frustration and very possible damage.

You can slide a small stone burr in a Dremel tool fore and aft till the case turns blue. It will then collapse and will be easily removed. Even if you go a little too far it won't hurt the shaft.

I used this to pull mine and it came right out. The only bad thing with this is buying it. Other than that it is extremely handy for all kinds of things.

I always use dremel tool as well.

Modified auto-bone $25 internal puller slide hammer dealy. What I've found is alot of people drive the bearing in too far not allowing the fingers behind it to grab it. Then you're stuck with a dremel type cutting tool.


I HATE dremels though.

+1. Best tool I've found for the rotary pilot bearings, comes with a slide hammer, and succeeded in removing a bearing I'd spent hours and 3 other rented tools on. Plus, it's only like, $40.

I had to cut mine out as well.

If just it's just the race in there and the bearings have been broken out, not even the Mazda puller will work.

If you already have a slap hammer then get one of these from autozone or
equivalent. You may have to file the fingers a bit to fit but it works great and its
less than 20 bucks.
