Turbo Upgrade Choices

Well, i MIGHT be in a position soon to begin really putting some money into my car. I have looked into turbo choices and setups and im not sure what i want to do yet.

I have a 2000 FD3s RB. Its mostly stock. I enjoy mountain roads and participate in monthly AutoX style events. I enjoy my response, but want more power. There is not a track local to me, but would love to ship my car to mainland japan and race there in the future.

Now, I am leaning towards 1 of these 3 options. If i stay twin i will remain sequential.

1. BNR stage 3 upgraded twins.
2. Knightsports upgraded twins
3. GT35r (T3? T3/T4?)

I want fast boost. extremely fast. I know the 35r is fast for singles, but its not as fast as twins. i heard/read the BNR's are better than the KS twins. any insight into this? Opinions?

Also, i want to use a vmount setup. i have always liked them. However, i do not think they will be best for my application. i mostly do lots of low gear 1-3 high rpm events. again, thoughs or opinions?

I plan to port the motor, (large street maybe??) and upgrade fuel etc to handle the increased flow and boost. thats not a problem.

Engine will be managed w/Power FC and i will include all supporting mods to accommodate everything.

Now, in order to stay very competitive at the autox events, have some fun in the mtns, and up the power, what would my best option be? I am not TOO worried about cost as this is tentative as i sit right now. and, if everything works out, i wont have to worry about cost.

(my ultimate goal is around 400, but i dont NEED it) i just want more than i have now.

I'd go BNR's or GT35r. I have BNR's and plan on making around 400seq. with my new engine. I had around 370 in my last engine before a coolant seal went. BNR's are going to be cheaper. And if you remove all the emissions junk twins are pretty each to work on. A negative is they are probably going to produce more heat than a single, and a single is very easy to work because there is only 3-4 vac. hoses vs. 8-10 with the simplified seq.

From my experience at high boost seq. you really aren't going to make a lot of power at low rpms just do to the flow of of the single twin, but you will make some which is probably more than most singles. Ideally you probably need to stay at least above 4k to have much, which is alot like a single. I counteracted most of this on the AutoX course just by getting on the gas sooner, or if you can/do left foot brake(I didn't) that should help.

If right now I had to change turbo's for some reason I'd go single, but I am very happy with the BNR's and will keep them until they either die, or someone gives me a single for free. After 10-20k hard miles with boost up to 18psi on them they have held up great.

i suggest the GT35r

Bnr stage three and Garfinkles Rich Mans Non Seq set up with the Y pipe modification . Open up the uim and that end is done .

For your requirements, you might consider the '99 turbos, and stay sequential.... you won't make 400 rwhp, but in some situations, your car will be quicker than cars that do.

He has a 2000 model FD so I'd guess he has teh 99 turbos...

at what rpm would the GT35r make full boost? what about the BNR's? I will not be going non sequential if i stay twins. If i am going to make the twins act like a single, ill go gt35r.

You may want to PM dregg100, he just removed a GT35r from his car. when i rode with him, it was boosting pretty quick. I've also played with a different 35r car through traffic, and it did very well.

BNRs make full boost about like the stock turbos, maybe a tad later just because they are a little bigger.

traynham -- you said that i should go gt35r.. whats the reasoning?

SPIC.. have you or do you know anyone that has used both? im leaning towards the BNRs because of what i use my car for. however, it has been a LONG time goal of mine to build my car into a very capable road racer with a nice gt35r...

Garfinkle.. what exactly is the benfit from going Rich mans non-seq vs going simplified sequential?

SPICcnmFD 02-28-2009 07:44 PM

I'm not sure who has used both. If I was you I'd probably just go gt35r if that is what you really want. Like I said I wish I was single, but I like the BNRs and have had not complaints about them.

I'm running my BNR's for the last 6 months and i'd say i'm very happy with their performance.I didn't go single because i like the power from low rpm that sequentials offer.I'd say go with the BNR...here is a video at 0.9 and 1.1 bar at 3rd and 4th gear....

I port and the manifold and close the unneeded holes and prespool ports .Reshape the turbo hot sides ,add a bigger wastegate door and port it. Fix the center section so the wastegate opens correctly .ect ect .The unit will flow better and spool faster . The work takes 15 -20 hours and uses mote than 1-1/4 lbs of welding rod .That is why I call it my Rich Mans Non Seq . Non of my customers have complained about performance .
