The other FC differential (56k warning)

I got something interesting last week.

Assuming I made the right purchase, this is the Torsen diff that the Infini IV came with.

I need to check if this is the real thing first and then find out if it's broken or not. I tried fitting some dowels into the diff and turning them and it seems to be alright. One goes clockwise when the other goes counter. Doesn't seem like there's much play either.

I've spun the side bearings a couple times and it seems there is a bit more resistance compared to other diffs I've played with. I suspect that it is because the differential is dry as bone with no oil anywhere. Makes sense if it was shipped from Japan.

From what I've seen and read, it looks like I will need the S4 T2 half shafts to complete the swap. Is there anything else I need? And should I get the earlier model (longer) shafts or the later S4 (shorter) shafts?

If anybody has any ofther tips, let me know.

Thank you.

Huh?

85rx-7gsl-se 12-15-2008 12:31 PM

How much did u pay?

firzen 12-15-2008 02:09 PM

Not too much- around 250 shipped.

Assuming your car is NA, you'll need a driveshaft too.

It's basically the same as a stock FD3S Torsen LSD.
For the price, it's a bit too much.
You can find them on eBay starting bid for a penny.
Typically final bids are usually under $100.
Shipping from Japan through cheap surface shipping is a little under $100.

Oh really? I thought they were usually more expensive than that.

RETed, I think I read somewhere that you ran these things before- are you aware of any differences between these and the FD units with regards to installation?

Thanks.

There's a seller on eBay named japandyno that does this.
I've found another eBay seller that does the same thing, but I can't remember the name right now.
I've gotten them for as cheap as $35.
Add $90 for surface air from Japan, and it's a fricken' deal for what you get.
These shops are probably dumping the FD Torsens for customers that swap out to aftermarket LSD's and don't want the stock units.

Installation is the same for any LSD...
If you can mark the ring position before you take everything apart, that makes this easier to put back!
The change in LSD does not alter the ring to pinion contact area.
You do need the equal length half shafts, so if you've got an S5 original diff, you need to get the proper stub axles.

i searched for his stuff and only found them for like 250

firzen 12-15-2008 07:39 PM

^ Same here, I've only found them for 250. Oh well, the money is spent and at least it's cheaper than buying a new unit from Mazda...

Does anybody know whether the earlier model S4 T2 stub shafts work better or do the latter ones?.

Max777 12-17-2008 04:34 PM

Hmm, I really want this and a Turbo rear housing...
