normal EGT temperatures

anyone with a egt gauge in their car?

when you are cruising around town what are your normal temperatures reading?

how about when you are cruising on the highway in 5th gear going about 60mph?

70mph? again not boosting but just average for cruising.

im trying to get a baseline for the forum on whats normal and whats high and low.

Pre or post turbo?

Pre turbo I see 1400F cruising at 85-90km/hr

At 120km/hr I see ~1500F or slightly higher

Probes are 1" from the exhaust ports.

hrmm i have my egt sensor downstream on the downpipe after the o2 sensor and im seeing:

Cruising at 100kph: 950-1050F

Crusing at 120kph: 1100-1200F

Daily around the city: 750-950F

When boosting: up to 1400F never got it higher intentionally.

I wonder if these would be comparable to your numbers if measured in the same location?

any turbo gurus on here?

Basically im trying to find out at what temperature will you start to "cook" your factory turbos if driven for prolonged periods of time.

Ok... Let's get some "context" before I shout my question out. I am running a SR20DET at 9psi with a S15 turbo, stock mafs, stock injectors, stock manifold, 3" downpipe, 3" cat, 3" cat-back.

Now the Autometer EGT probe is located on the small part between the turbo and the downpipe. I know, I know, it is not in the hottest runner.

Now, considering all this, what would you think safe EGT readings would be?

EGT is relative to where you place it, best please is int he acutally manifold. the close to the turbo the more accurate reading you get.

right im also trying to find a good relative compensation for where you place it... how much of a drop is to be expected etc in addition to "normal" expected egt's

unfortunatly there is no answer to that question as nobodies got the same setup meaning the temps can vary GREATLY. now wouldnt you want the temp that gives you best performance wise not "max turbo life temp".

now howard colman runs his at i believe 1460f under 14.7psi and 1550f above measured 1" from the engine mount flange in the manifold between the engine and turbo. he also has said in his setup he saw on average 300f difference between his normal pre-turbo spot and the post-turbo spot. he is also running twin t04s which i can guarantee is nothing like your setup so the only temps you can use would be the pre turbo temps as they would be closest to the same for comparison sake.
