My Broken FD

You will need Photobucket Hotlink fix adon to view the photos in this post

Thanks.

Hi,

I have had my RX7 for a couple of years now, its been a real labour of love

It's a 1992 FD
since i have had it, I have done some things.

Here s the car the day i got it
https://image.ibb.co/dVXjzy/12107913...69783202_n.jpg
It has had a bit of a hit in the front and bent the rail and needs a rad support

I quickly set around to stripping the car down and repairing the accident damage

getting pulled straight
https://image.ibb.co/ewok6d/20131005...psa7215685.jpg
here you can see where the rail was kinked
https://image.ibb.co/e4H1ey/20131005...pse527f933.jpg
pretty straight now
https://image.ibb.co/cH6SKy/20131005...pse1568a2c.jpg
radiator support panel is off now and the chassis measuring system is under the car
https://image.ibb.co/gamzXJ/1380804_...93358001_n.jpg
here is a copy of the data sheet that shows where all the points in the car should be

Test fitting before welding

Welded and fitted, ready for the insides to be painted.

At this point the engine went back in.
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps8jqfmdpb.jpg

I got another bumper and test fitted some bits I was planning to run on the body.
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/o...psovnb1sn1.jpg

Got myself a new computer.
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/o...psbchdgxlg.jpg

Did some wiring
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps45efff25.jpg

Got it to run. (completely untuned)
(not sure if youtube works on the BB here)
First run and idle - YouTube

When I got the car it was running on the factory ecu. It had the OMP removed and a single HT18 turbo. there were alot of loose bolts and dodgy things in the engine bay.
I got myself a Nightsports T04b hybrid upgrade for the turbo as i wanted to keep things small and responsive on the road.
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps8d545bdc.jpg

So this is the way she was when it went off for the first setup and tune.

Locked and loaded.
Roll on 8am tomorrow

fingers (toes, arms, and legs) crossed for a good outcome

Man, I wish my shed had exhaust pipes!!

Setting up pre dyno

https://image.ibb.co/jdmuGd/20140911...psedmpbbzc.jpg

loaded up

https://image.ibb.co/esowUy/1554561_...61613169_n.jpg

Here is a little video while doing some lower range runs (not very exciting)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHGcye0DDvA

Sadly the enlarged internal wastegate on the turbo was too small and was giving some boost spikes up to a bar, not ideally where i would like it
so we gave up on the tuning for the day and i'll have a new manifold made with a 60mm external wastegate and do it all over again.

Not that it matters much but this is the chart.
https://image.ibb.co/ijWTbd/20140911...ps7pc0zm9x.jpg
there is plenty more to be done.

SPRSTA 04-07-2018 05:08 PM

Then I took the car back into work to start on the repaint.
Here are a couple of progress pics.

In primer
https://image.ibb.co/fhyPhJ/10600419...93369577_n.jpg

Got some primer down last week
https://image.ibb.co/i7Us2J/1461849_...39352212_n.jpg

https://image.ibb.co/htd8bd/10414374...33544743_n.jpg

got the shell rubbed down today. Roll on some colour.
https://image.ibb.co/khc1wd/10153773...93413116_n.jpg

So the shell has some colour on it now.

Boy does it look good!!

https://image.ibb.co/cHL4Gd/934846_8...ps91390677.jpg
First we needed to lay a black base down over the primer so that the colour wouldn't look blotchy

https://image.ibb.co/eMZmUy/13146_84...ps992d3e63.jpg
then some of the colour in all of its magnificence.

http://https://image.ibb.co/geVh2J/1...ps4b1f7307.jpg
Its pretty hard to see the colour in these photos but it really looks awesome out in the sun.

Super excited to get some colour on all the bolt on panels and get it back together for good!!:bouncin:

EDIT:
https://image.ibb.co/b54VNJ/983829_1...pswtzv2f0j.jpg

Rear end of the car is pretty much back together now. just got the windows to go back in

http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps4f8748fb.jpg

stuck my diffuser on today too.

Sounds a great build. Gonna try that PB trick at home.

t_g_farrell 04-16-2018 07:10 AM

Can't see the pics and not loading some unknown "fix" for it. Good luck with the build.

raynard35 04-16-2018 08:13 PM

I can't make the trick work here. Anyone tried it yet and make it work?

Hey Folks,

Site looks good!

I owned a 79 and an 83 RX7 decades ago.

Toying with the idea of getting an RX8 to replace my wife's Cadillac that some idiot hit last week.

Any good used rx8's out there for sale?.

NE USA?

Would love to create a rotary jet/ Boston Whaler set up some day too!

Thanks!
Bill
