Any tricks to getting front pulley hub bolt off?
The front pulley hub bolt on this engine is giving me a hard time. I have the flywheel locked with a proper tool and I heated up the bolt to break down any threadlocker that may be present. I'm using a 4' pole slipped over a ratchet (can't find the breaker bar...), and I keep lifting the engine stand off the ground and I think I bent the flywheel locking tool a little bit. Aren't these things only supposed to be torqued down to 90 ft/lb?
I'll try to get the air compressor working tomorrow so I can try to impact it off, but is there any reason it would be this hard to remove? :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: |
A few years ago I broke mine loose by using a piece of angle iron with holes, but I didn't have a flywheel stopper back then. I also had it sitting on the ground though, and it did tilt a little bit but mine probably wasn't as tight as yours. Maybe using the angle iron and putting it on the ground will help though. As long as you can keep the engine from twisting with it. But the impact gun should help too. Sorry, I'm not much help haha.

What did you use to heat the bolt up? Maybe you should heat it up more, sometimes you have to get them pretty damn hot!

You need to keep the engine from moving.
Get a heavy friend to stand on the engine when you attempt this again. That should be enough to get the bolt off. Else, an impact gun rated closer to 1000 lb-ft will guarantee take it off. The torque rating doesn't explain why it's so stubborn. It's more the threadlocker that on the length of the threads, coupled with the fact that bolt is sunk into the pulley boss with all that metal surrounding it keeps even the hottest torch from dissolving the threadlocker with heat. -Ted |

some 2" x 2" angle iron and drilled holes and mounted it to the mounting bolts on the front housing (12A) and then slipped a 6' iron pipe over my 25" breaker bar. Before that I heated it up real good with a torch. Even then I had to bounce on it hard a couple of times before it broke loose. That bolt seems to gall together with the pulley mount hub and the shaft until they are one! I've had more issues with those than any flywheel nut ever. |
Finally got it. We used a longer pipe and I stood on the engine stand while my dad leaned on the pipe.
I pulled the front cover, breathed a sigh of relief when I confirmed I ordered the right gasket/o-ring combo, then promptly sliced my thumb open on the CAS drive gear :lol:. |
