Reinstalled cruise control with aftermarket wheel

3 Attachment(s)
I have a Momo wheel, Daikei hub and NRG quick release and wanted to reinstall cruise control for the DGRR journey, but I wasn't sure how to mount the controls. After looking on here and the other forum I had some ideas. I ended up making a bracket and instead of mounting it to the plastic I mounted it directly to the hub. After I test to make sure it works I'm going to drill a hole into the black cover that slips over the hub, de-pin the wires and slip them through the hole and put them back into the clip and connect it inside the cover so it's all hidden. I'll post more pics of the bracket and then pics of it finished as well. I'm thinking about making this bracket black so it blends in, but I'm not sure if I should get it anodized, powdercoated or what.

As you can probably tell, it took me a bit to get the holes drilled in the right places haha. Oh, and I used 1/16" angle iron.

OK so here is the finished product. I tested the cruise control tonight and it still works, so I completed the project like I had planned. I wrapped the wires in electrical tape just to subdue it more but it looks kinda ghetto so I may take that off and try to use some heat shrink.

The pics should be pretty self explanatory, but basically I just drilled a hole, de-pinned the wires from the connector, ran them through and reconnected the connector. I also painted the bracket black to subdue it more too. I sanded the metal down first as well before paint.

Also, and I figure this is pretty obvious, but make sure to put the pins back in the right slots when you're finished. I attached a close-up to confirm where they connect. I had marked it with a sharpie before taking it out because I have a horrible memory and figured I'd forget just a few seconds later lol.

A couple more pics...

When I start running out of things to do to the car I will find more things to do because I'm addicted to modifying it lol.

Nicely done Eric!

Thanks Brian! Of course, once I get Simon's Deep Corn wheel I'll have to make a new bracket anyway LOL.

Meh, it happens

how do the wires connect? collar, or some other means?

speedjunkie 01-17-2011 12:50 PM

All the wires and connectors are still stock, I didn't change any of that other than routing it through the shroud.

I'll probably go take a pic since my car is most likely dead from the dyno this weekend and I have all kinds of time lol.

Unfortunately, if it really is dead I might not be making it to DGRR11.

impressive

Thanks! I wish I'd gotten to use it more than once before killing the engine LOL.

good thing to know. even though ill probably be ripping out my unit to build a custom coil box.

speedjunkie 03-01-2011 03:27 AM

Back when I first swapped the steering wheel from stock, I took out my cruise control unit and put the coils up there. After driving the car home (about 12 hours or so) with no cruise control I decided I have to have it for the drive to NC (closer to 24 hours or so). Although now since my engine is being rebuilt I'm not sure if I'll even make it to DGRR this year. Also I'm not sure I'll have a place to stay even if I do make it out there this year since I haven't registered yet.

Anyway, the write-up (if it can even be called that lol) is here if you ever need it.

RE: REbuild - still got 60 days man, plenty of time.
RE: Place to stay - there's always room for one more. We had an asian sleeping in the closet 2 years ago :smilielol5:

nicely done with the set-up but how do you like the NRG quick release and what version is it? I'm looking into a quick release to get for my car.

speedjunkie 11-29-2011 02:29 PM

Thanks! I like it, I've never had a problem with it. It's version 2.5 I believe. They're not too expensive and they do the job well. I'm not sure if I'd trust anything else they make (not that I have a reason not to trust them haha), but I haven't heard of any problems with the quick releases yet.

I also switched my steering wheel out to a Nardi Deep Corn. I don't think I have any pics with me though.

And the cruise control works perfectly.
