added a 12v plug

So i added a 12v outlet in my car for various reasons. I checked it with a multimeter at the plug and its getting correct voltage, but its popping the inline fuse i put in.

I just got a simple connector and plugged it into the power side of the auto seatbelt fuse slot since I no longer have them in the car. I chose that one because it gives constant 12v power. I ran a wire to a inline fuse before reaching the 12v outlet. The 12v outlet only has two wires on it, power and ground. I grounded the one to a near by bolt. And ran the power wire from the outlet to my power source.

It pops the inline fuse pretty much instantly if i have something plugged into the outlet.

Any ideas?

What size fuse?

sen2two 04-22-2010 08:34 PM

well, i tryed a 15amp and a 20amp. The seat belt fuse slot is a 30amp, so that might be the reaosn. But then i tried a few other slots that only have 10-15 amps. They still bust the 20amp fuse. I then tryed the 12v power from my ignition wire, and still popped the fuse... I checked my ground coming off the 12v outlet for continuity, just to make sure its a good ground. Yupp... good ground. So whats the problem???

I put in an Add-A-Fuse with a 15amp fuse for my extra outlet and haven't had any problems running a phone charger. Wish I could help more.

add-a-fuse? is that the thing that looks like a fuse but has a power wire coming off of it? seen that at autozone, but i was unsure it it would make a difference?

Yeah, it's basically a fuse holder with a wire coming off of it.

Have you tried different plugs? That could internally shorted. Other than that the outlet's fucked

sen2two 04-23-2010 02:31 PM

what do you mean by "different plugs"?

TitaniumTT 04-23-2010 05:40 PM

try a cell phone charger
then try a small inverter
then try am ipod adapter
then try a 12V ballscratcher
then try the sweedish grip suck machine
then try.... well you get the idea

Interesting way of getting your point across.

Actually i tryed a few different plugs... And i tested the inverter in 2 other cars, it worked fine.

Do you have the ground and power wire connected to the correct spots on the plug? IIRC the power is the center one and the ground is the whole outside portion.

You would be correct
