Pulled Turbo, have questions
I pulled the turbo because I had an exhaust leak on one rotor and assumed it was the block-to-manifold or block-to-turbo gasket. However, the 4th picture shows what was causing the leak. A EGT hole! I can't believe I didn't see it taking off the turbo but I was too worried about not breaking studs to notice.
Other than an EGT sensor itself, do I use a steel or brass NPT plug to stop the leak? It is a Knightsport front housing with stock hotside. The wastegate is unported as far as I can tell. It has had part of the front housing ground down slightly to fit next to the LIM. Can anyone tell me what to expect out of the turbo as a whole? I noticed a deposit that seams to be leaking out of it (see pic 5). Can anyone tell me what this is and if it is a symptom of a problem? Coolant? If it has problems I want to take care of them before it goes back on the motor. Thanks! http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DOIP7bvsJCI/S3...0/IMG00150.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_DOIP7bvsJCI/S3...0/IMG00149.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DOIP7bvsJCI/S3...0/IMG00151.jpg http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DOIP7bvsJCI/S3...0/IMG00146.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/_DOIP7bvsJCI/S3...0/IMG00147.jpg |
I've used steel and brass and either or will work.
The brass is more forgiving and should be easier to remove if you need to at a later date. The metal doesn't get hot enough to melt brass. -Ted |
Thanks Ted, I'll go with brass.

Anyone have any ideas as to the white deposit on the hotside? I'll try to take a better pic tonight.

Ok. I have never rebuilt a turbo. What would it take to get rebuilt? Can I do this myself?
What would it cost to send it to you and be rebuilt? Thanks btw. :) |

Coolant leak is probably coming from one of the coolant hardlines. Chances are just a crush washer needs to be replaced. Look for pitting on the hardline and chra though.
