New from Northern VA

Bought my first rotary recently. 93' RX7, not sure how many miles are on it yet I hooked up a battery but the odometer doesn't seem to light up along with the other dash lights.

The engine is apart in pieces and I'm currently hunting some rebuild parts for it. The previous owner already started buying misc. O-rings, seals, gaskets and apex seals. Otherwise I would just buy a complete kit. I'm just learning about rotaries as I've only owned and worked on piston cars. Mostly hondas, I had an Evo and now the Rx7. I bought the bruce turrentine DVD to expand my knowledge on this type of engine.

I hope to get it back on the road within the next few months.

RotorDad 06-30-2009 08:11 PM

What's up there man? Good to see you joined the forum, I haven't been here all that long myself.

vex 06-30-2009 11:25 PM

Sweet yo, what part of Northern VA? I'm originally from Alexandria and head that way every so often.

I really need to find me an FD and/or save money to buy an FD

boost d3vil 07-01-2009 08:14 AM

I'm in Warrenton

vex 07-02-2009 11:55 AM

lol, I drive by there almost every day. We'll have to Get WE3RX7 and a few other rx7 owners out.

boost d3vil 07-02-2009 12:01 PM

Yeah man I should have my FD on the road by Xmas lol. No probably a few months most of my rebuild parts should be in next week and I'm painting the engine bay this weekend. Once the motor is in I have to get the whole car sprayed.

WE3RX7 07-02-2009 12:17 PM

Suppose I should check in.... welcome aboard man.

You originally from warrenton? Just wondering if we met before... I grew up in culpeper so I know a lot of people in the car scene from surrounding areas...

Congrats on the FD find... what are the details? Color, model, any existing modifications, where'd it come from, etc....?

boost d3vil 07-02-2009 12:31 PM

I'm actually in Amissville off 211. Graduated from CCHS in 2005, I'll throw some pics up of everything

boost d3vil 07-02-2009 12:37 PM

Bought the car from Jon Savage he's a honda builder out in fredricksburg owns a shop - Hybrid Garage.

He had started some prep work that I will finish once the motorwork is done.

boost d3vil 07-02-2009 01:02 PM

Here are some more pics of the pile of motor parts and bolts I got along with the car lol. As you guys can see no bolts/nuts are labeled.

WE3RX7 07-02-2009 01:15 PM

I know his shop and I think I know where you live, lol... another rotor head lives out off 211 in amisville too - he's working on his FB project.

If you're an '05 grad I probably wouldn't know you ('02 alum of CCHS - so we missed by a few years)... but i'm sure I've seen you around town. I just moved back to culpeper in March...

we'll definitely have to all get together at some point. Let me know if you need a hand in the car though, the FD is the only gen i've never owned, but I've got the bases covered everywhere else...

vex 07-02-2009 01:15 PM

Man, I would take everything apart and clean and inspect it all. I mean all by hand, take it down till you see metal and not rust. Inspect the housings and irons. But I'm anal. I double and triple checked my 6port when I tore it apart.

and lol at the random thermal reactor for an NA.

WE3RX7 07-02-2009 01:17 PM

That looks like a fire sale, lol everything must go in that project - seems like a good deal to me.

It appears you have some totally random parts in there though, some not even rx-related, lol... it also looks like at least one of what appears to be two engines he gave you was a reman engine.. so you should have some relatively low mileage good parts in that pile...

I hope to pick up a similar project next summer once my FC is nearing completion....

You've def got your work cut out for ya though.... you'll learn to love the rotary though and hopefully never go back to pistons!

boost d3vil 07-02-2009 01:24 PM

Yeah I just bought the Bruce turrentine dvd on rotaries so I'm learning the basics and I've already started cleaning some of the parts. I've never touched anything outside of a piston engine so it will be fun. I have extra stuff that came with it as you can see from the pics I have 2 rotors, 2 rotor housings and all the sides and middle plate from a N/A motor. Not sure the year or mileage I can find out but if anyone needs those parts lmk.

WE3RX7 07-02-2009 01:28 PM

Did you not get the FD irons?

Wonder how it got all mixed in w/ NA parts and turbo... you see that in the FC world, not so much in the FD world...

boost d3vil 07-02-2009 01:35 PM

Yeah I got all the fd irons everything is there plus the na stuff

vex 07-02-2009 01:42 PM

Am I smelling Hi-Comp Seq-Turbo's, or is that just me?

one320fc 07-02-2009 02:57 PM

I think I will keep it black. Probably won't use the Mazda color code but go with some kind of nice glossy black.

Yeah I got the rear plate from John on Tuesday.

RotorDad 07-02-2009 10:34 PM

that's nice that you got the FD, it seems like everyone i know has a dsm, honda or a Z car. finally got another rotary within the people i know

WE3RX7 07-03-2009 08:16 AM

Yea, we should all plan a meet sometime central in culpeper or stafford.... I havent even met up w/ RotorDad yet..

vex 07-03-2009 08:57 AM

I'm getting my drive shaft today! So I may be able to do it when everyone else says they're good to go too.

boost d3vil 07-03-2009 09:51 AM

I'll be driving my beater since the rx7 is far from completion. Anyone ever go up to Chik fila in Sterling? I use to go there every friday back when I had my evo. I use to see a few FDs up there but not many FCs if any.

RotorDad 07-03-2009 11:43 AM

I'm game, but my 7's are currently down. So i would have to bring the Speed6 or the Spec V

WE3RX7 07-04-2009 01:22 PM

I went to chick-fil-a a lot (i lived in sterling for two years - just moved back to culpeper in march of this year)... I was usually w/ those FD guys but I was in my 8 or the Jeep...

vex 07-04-2009 01:52 PM

B, I'd probably have to follow you there since I've never been... at least I think I've never been.

Maybe I saw you then. I talked to a few rotary guys last year. One with a rx8 if I remember right it was black w/ cf hood and a roll cage. He had just gotten it tuned. I haven't been this year any I sold the evo and don't feel like drivin my beater up there lol.

WE3RX7 07-06-2009 01:25 PM

You probably talk to the turbo 8 guy - i think he sold his car... I havent seen him there in a while.

Mine is dark green/enkei wheels no CF hood :)

boost d3vil 07-06-2009 08:08 PM

Well most of my rebuild parts I ordered from Atkins will be delivered to my house on the 8th. I can get crackin on the motor work soon. I've already bought some metal polish and will begin to shine up parts like the Intake manifolds, alternator, intake piping, ect. Gonna need a lot of elbow grease lol.

WE3RX7 07-06-2009 08:34 PM

Those manifolds take a lot of time, lol... I have a half polished rear turbo pipe for the FD that the previous owner I guess gave up on after hours of work, lol...

I've only polished two sets in the past and they took 12 hours minimum each....

Vex, we can go up to chick-fil-a some friday.... I usually work in arlington on fridays, but i can meet you in gainessville one day and drive up if you want to follow... we just need a nice friday evening and the lot will be packed...

Tempting... but I think I might be out for the summer. Life is packed this close to the wedding. CRAP, I still have a lot to do. ugh...

one320fc 07-09-2009 01:43 PM

I think we should all get together and have a cook out one sat. If we can get some good weather!

WE3RX7 07-09-2009 02:13 PM

Just a matter of finding the time I guess...

boost d3vil - I was curious, but why did you get rid of the evo? It seems evo owners are pretty die hard and going to a rwd rotary platform would be considered a mitsu sin in their world, lol....

vex 07-09-2009 05:48 PM

Going to be pulling my turbo to button up one or two things this weekend down in culpeper if anyone wants to point and laugh.

one320fc 07-09-2009 06:40 PM

Im game, if we can manage to pull Billy from the soon to be wifey :)we would be in good shape

LoL that may be true.. my friends from the evo board are pretty cool though I posted my FD project and they like it. Most of them want me to throw a LS1 in it but they're not bashing me for going rotary lol.

I sold the evo due to extremely high monthly payments and I'm about to buy a house so I couldn't afford both. The FD I got pretty cheap and its an ongoing project that I'm in no hurry or rush to complete. Although being able to drive it someday would be nice!

I'd be down to stop by and give a hand if needed when will you be working on it?
