wow looks like you having fun ! whats the mileage on the car? and why are you doing this? you like 5 speed better ? keep in mine you got a 3.90 diff in the rear since its a auto.

Whizbang 02-15-2009 11:07 AM

i would assume it has something to do with "fun factor". An auto US vert is THE slowest thing ever made with a rotary. That is probably not true, but it feels like it.

bigtony08 02-15-2009 11:24 AM

no all verts have a 4.10 rear. and im doing the swap cause trannys dead and for the fun factor lol

actually that isnt correct.

1988 and 1989 verts had 3.91 final drives regardless of the transmission they were sold with. Then for 1990 the 4.10 became the final drive for the manual transmission (like the coupes) and a 3.91 was retained for the automatics.

bigtony08 02-15-2009 02:32 PM

damn that sucks sorry bout that. btw do i need to retain the tranny cooler lines or just pinch them off. and how hard is it usualy to get the TC bolts out im haveing a hell of a time. also how is that rear end is it still ok to run with the five speed. also Low the car has 91000 miles on it

Whizbang 02-15-2009 02:35 PM

the tranny cooler lines that feed to the radiator are fine left unconnected at the radiator. As far as the torque converter bolts, i use impacts on everything 90% of the time.

The rear is not THAT bad. My 88 vert only came in 5 spd (1988 thing for verts) and as previously stated, has the 3.91. It gets better fuel mileage at the loss of some performance. Biggest thing is the wieght of the vert compared to a coupe. But coming from an automatic to a manual is a pretty big leap, especially in the enjoyment department

bigtony08 02-15-2009 02:43 PM

what about the vacume line running to it just plug it? and how can you get an impact in to thoes bolts. also can i pull the tranny with the torque converter still atached to the flex plate and then unbolt it

Rotary#10 02-15-2009 02:48 PM

are you using the FSM ? be sure to get some vac hose nipple covers for those ends on to where ever they go. still looks good for 91,xxx miles :)

bigtony08 02-15-2009 03:03 PM

thanks and what is FSM?

Max777 02-16-2009 12:16 AM

Do you have a transmission to go in this thing already? I would STRONGLY recomend you to use the Turbo transmission, along with a performance clutch, this might be a bit more expensive to do, but in the long run, the N/A transmissions are known to fail, even more so, the stock clutch disks are even worse!

NOTE: A nice thing about an auto to manual swap, is that you can retain the stock driveshaft if you get the Turbo model's transmission, it's a bit a bit of a ghetto fit, but this will allow you to retain the stock rear end untill you have more money to buy a turbo differential housing.

Further info on differentials: FD (1993-1995) models have a really nice TORSEN unit that fits into the FC turbo rear diff housing, this is a setup I am doing myself, and one that has been recomended numerous times by others who did it)

Anyway, good luck with the swap, is it just me, or does it looks like a lot of people have gotten blue S5 convertibles lately? (I have one too!)

bigtony08 02-16-2009 11:35 AM

semes to be a common color. but yea i already have everything plus im not really gonna mod anthing but the suspension. and maybe like a half bridge

FSM is the mechanic and techs bible of the car basically.

bigtony08 02-16-2009 02:59 PM

Rotary#10 02-17-2009 01:39 AM

hey guys its been snowing here so its kinda hard to get anything done but in the meantime i was looking at what i could do with this project and i want to keep it as JDM as possiable so im sticking with 15" wheels and low pro tires with a one inch drop and some swaybars to help it handle. besides sticking with the 15's what do you guys sujest as far as body and paint? post some pics so i can see. all input is greatly appericated. also here is a pic of the wheels im looking at

bigtony08 02-24-2009 05:11 PM

Good news got the car towed to the technical center and have one bolt to pull tommrow and the old tranny will be out! ill post new pics tommrow. BTW the socket to pull the flywheel bolt off is a bitch to find at a parts store. its a 2 1/8" socket.:88:

WE3RX7 02-25-2009 04:43 PM

Whats w/ the old Benz?

What else are you doing there w/ the old wheels off? Swapping the rear end entirely?

bigtony08 02-25-2009 05:18 PM

lol the benz is the shop toy. and im just changing rear brake pads.

Max777 03-01-2009 03:34 PM

Dude, so I had no idea that the stupid cross member was removable... why do I only find out now that I've both tanken the engine out, and put it back in with the damn thing still in there?

I guess it's better that I at least know it now!

PS: The socket is available at Sears, it will be a chrome 12point socket. Dont worry, it wont break if you use it with an impact. You also need to get an adapter so it will fit a 1/2 impact drive.

bigtony08 03-01-2009 11:08 PM

bought one from Ohio tools in a six point also i have a 3/4" impact gun

Max777 03-02-2009 05:58 PM

lol, I made one out of a Crown Royal Baggie, mine is kinda ghetto, but it's only on there as a joke.

your shift boot looks a lot better btw, i just think you should coat the fabric in black.

bigtony08 03-13-2009 06:57 AM

lol the interior is blue. but it was all i had so its just there as a quick fix. im trying to find a stock black boot but you know how that is.

why not just get the manual transmission crossmember? your car is S5, and S5's have both sets of mounting points.
