A fun project I'm sure many will enjoy.

The past few months I've been wrenching on an old Yamaha G1A I got from someone at work. The idea was to put a rotary in it and just have fun with it. This seed was planted from when the guys and I at RotaryRecycle were building the go-kart project. I had an idea at that time to use a golf cart differential or something similar but we were short on time for DGRR so the end result was simply a drive belt and pulley set-up which unfortunately ruined the practicality of having a go-kart (ask DJ  ). The thing would go really freaking fast once moving though!

After collecting dust under my house for years (and while in the middle of moving) I found motivation to do something new with the KM24. Here is the bitchin sweet '79 G1 the day I brought her home. .

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5493/3...5f01cf63_c.jpg

The tires/wheels were in very rough shape (the rear especially), I needed to get new tires first thing before doing anything else so I could easily roll the thing around without having to air the tires each time. I was not aware how expensive these stupid tires were till I needed some, I just assumed an 8" golf cart tire with wheel would have been ~$40-50. . . I was sadly mistaken, the tires alone were $60 (each!) at Wal-Mart! Anyways, I found a much better deal on eBay for a wheel/tire combo and 10" DOTs to top it off. I definitely put lipstick on a pig :)

After mocking things up I found I needed a different intake manifold, one with a bend or else I'd have to move the engine further forward than I'd like. Once I got that, the fun could begin

https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5590/3...8536a6a8_c.jpg

I swapped the original carb out with another Tillotson, one with a built in fuel pump, rebuilt it too.

https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/768/31...778e3bc8_c.jpg

Since this was originally a two-stroke model (different components to spin engine opposite direction for reverse), most of the electronics/wiring weren't compatible with my application and to top it off the wiring was too complex for me to figure out how to retain something as simple as a solenoid so I stripped it all out. Keeping it stupid simple, I used trailer wire as a harness (the ends have connectors!) and a universal solenoid and ignition switch.

https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5566/3...4881da4e_c.jpg

After removing the overcomplicated TEN wire ignition switch that was much larger than the simple universal piece I installed, I needed something to attach it. I made a plate using a sticker a friend made for a template. I thought this was a nice touch :)

Getting close. . Ordered a K&N and a drive belt. . the first belt I ordered was pretty darn close! just a little too small. I ordered two larger sizes

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5553/3...2eb9a23a_c.jpg

I got her running, now to get an exhaust made, adjust the carb, and hope one of the two belts I ordered works better than the current. . Anyways, hope y'all get a kick out of this, it sure has been fun so far! Here's a BookFace video, not sure if everyone can see it? ? If not I'll try something else.

Haha that's awesome.

Thank you sir

t_g_farrell 12-13-2016 08:41 AM

Same size wheels as a mini. Will it do wheelies when its done?

I think when its done you need to take in on the golf course and see what kind of reactions
you get. No muffler!

TitaniumTT 12-13-2016 09:45 AM

Wait until you see people getting ready for a swing and shoot fireballs

I'm no golfer but even if I wanted to troll anyone, I don't think I'd even make it off the trailer without being confronted. . It's ReAlY LOUD! !

I have a new belt from our last project. I will check on what part # it is when i get home.

FC Zach 12-16-2016 07:39 AM

I called Jess about that belt wondering if he had it. . . It's probably close because the one on the cart right now (LM717) is the same one we had on the go-kart. Nevertheless, the two other belts I ordered arrived yesterday. Curious what you have though. Hell, I'm the one that ordered those but I've slept since then.

FC Zach 12-16-2016 09:02 AM

Here's the belts I made a note of. Belt '717 ordered first and as soon as I get the cart back from the guys down the street, I'll try '1039 and '1116. Let me know what you got.

That's a 41 3/8" OD belt, way too small for my app. Thank you though.

almoststockfc 12-16-2016 10:48 AM

Anybody have a rotary snowmobile that needs a new belt?! LOL

FC Zach 12-16-2016 10:53 AM

According to the Dennis Kirk site it'll also fit these:

Additional fitments -
Fox Trac: 67-68 models
Larson: 66-69 all models
Massy-Ferguson (Ski-Whiz) Model 297 - 1969
Moto-Kometic - 72-74 all models
OMC (Evinrude & Johnson):
Norseman 72
Challenger - 70-71
Skeeter 64-69 (all)
Sno Cruiser - 70-71
Poloron - Toronado - 71-72

FC Zach 12-16-2016 11:01 AM

Side note. . I didn't know Massey-Ferguson made snow mobiles and the model listed above definitely has styling cues from their tractor line- up of the period.

I have headlights, taillights, a windshield, and can do hand signals. Is that good enough?

rx7 vinnie 12-18-2016 01:12 PM

Yes!!!! They ride these everywhere downtown. You need to get my wife's company to wrap it.

FC Zach 12-18-2016 03:19 PM

What kind of wrap design you have in mind?

almoststockfc 12-18-2016 06:06 PM

What is the name of your wifes company vinn? Would possibly be interested for the truck.

rx7 vinnie 12-20-2016 04:51 PM

Text me as I lost your number.... Ain't putting her number on the boards lol.

Hell yeah! I like!

Exhaust was a little too hot and baking the body, I found some DEI Titanium exhaust wrap that made a huge difference!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/630/30...54254fb7_c.jpg

The original clutch to the motor wasn't engaging completely (not even half way) so I ordered a new one.

https://c6.staticflickr.com/1/714/31...5b8e34ca_c.jpg

Before changing the clutch, the cart would only do 17MPH. Now I've clocked it at 28 but that's still not good enough. . the current belt is too big so I gotta go through finding the appropriate size again :icon_no2:

FC Zach 12-24-2016 05:24 PM

I cleaned and installed these kewl curtains/fuzzy seat covers straight outa the 80's

FC Zach 01-12-2017 12:28 AM

Ordered the appropriate belt after Christmas, put it on this week and took her for a spin after adjusting the carb. What a difference! Gonna tinker with it some more and get the carb dialed in, will upload a video soon.

t_g_farrell 01-12-2017 01:37 PM

We better see this at DGRR this year.

Cool project.

Cool project.

You will I hope, it's the plan at least. I thought it'd be a great beer/whatever fetcher from our cabin.

It will be perfect for that, as long as it can traverse the speed bumps they have on the road up the hill without tossing any beer coolers off the back :cheers2:

Ha Ha, forgot about that! I will have to keep a bungee cord handy for that reason.

FC Zach 01-25-2017 01:19 AM

I had been trying to get the carb right on this thing for some time but without any luck. Last weekend I put the original carb to the motor back on after rebuilding it and took it out this morning. . SUCCESS! ! Got it to reach over 30MPH! thing is a hoot!

Hard to see in this crappy video but it got to 29 up hill :D not bad for a golf cart.

Johnny_K 01-25-2017 08:50 AM

nice to see you getting it sorted out.

yea, video was kind bla..

What do you mean by youtube tags? You mean embed?

FC Zach 01-25-2017 08:52 AM

The tags that you wrap a link with. . What link do I embed in there?

FC Zach 01-25-2017 08:54 AM

I've tried the browser, bbcode, and share link. . All the same result.

t_g_farrell 01-25-2017 09:14 AM

Fixed for ya Zach. Do a quote on this post to see what I did. '

You'll slap yourself in the face afterwards.

I can't wait to see this in person.
