1990 Turbo Vert (Darkwing Duck)

Ok here we go, but first I'd like to say... I didn't name my car.

Original thread pics.

This car was saved from the clutches of an abandoned v8 swap by a young kid and sat for a year in my garage due to title issues. I was able to get it worked out and put in a full TII engine/trans and a front mount to get it running. The jspec had a Knightsports turbo but with no fuel control I sold it and bought a good stock turbo. It had ebay coilover sleeves only on the front so I found AGXs and GF210s. With the car driving I picked up a Rtek 1.7 and then eventually a Rtek 2.0. I put in some RC750 injectors and ran about 10-11psi comfortably. Early this year jfaplanet and I put in RX-8 seats using both the stock and rx8 rails. It was in this state for a few months and made it to Deal's Gap and back (700 miles) performing great except for crazy documented body roll. (since been fixed with coilovers).

In May I decided to have some fun and undertook my first standalone. I went with the Haltech SprintRE and have had a great experience so far. I used Deutsch connectors for the CAS and coils, and took care in my routing. I was maxing out the stock primaries so I took the opportunity to buy a set of ID1000 from Full Function Engineering. They are great. Just this week I changed to AGXs with stiffer GC coils. The car is much stiffer now, but not rock hard drifter suspension stiff. It is very competent. I can't wait to take it to DGRR again next year.

Current Setup:
Haltech Sprint RE
4 x ID1000 new injectors
Racing Beat turbo full exhaust (single DP/presilencer)
FMIC
HKS SSQV
CAI into bumper
KYB AGX with GC coilovers 375/250lb springs
TII replica lip
Rx-8 seats
5spd Rx-8 knob

Future plans include a clutch, BNR, and some wheels/better tires.

Those seats look amazing there!

sweet! i would love to do a turbo vert

My5ABaby 08-16-2011 03:18 PM

I'd slip it in a few times.... :icon_tup:

Very nice!!

pics added above!

Update: Running about 12psi now bleeding down to 8-10 past 6k but pulls really nice in 3rd and 4th. Would love a BNR but even now the clutch is starting to slip around 5k at peak torque. Needs a clutch more now than ever. Smooth Idle at 12.5 AFRs.

Have I introduced you to my clutch? Her name is Slippy McSlipperton. She is a cruel temptress who, like most women, take the fun out of what you are trying to do even as you are doing it! :ack2:

Sidenote: Tennessee Clutch Supply sucks!

Good job on the vert!
Is the S4 sec. fuel rail the only option if I want to go for another FPR or is it possible with the S5 rail too?
I guess you have alot more fuel than really needed with the 4x1000`s, did it make it hard to tune?

FerociousP 08-29-2011 01:38 PM

Its really not possible with the s5 rail as the FPR isn't removeable. With an s4 rail you get threaded ends with only the addition of a few washers to space it upward. With the right '90deg fittings you can lose the banjo bolts and have a slightly freer flowing rail. Replacing the FPR with one on the firewall would also just be simply easier at this stage as well.

The 4 x ID1000 actually made it easier to tune. FFE provided me with the inj dead time table which accounts for different flow in certain situations. Compared to the stock 550s, I have a MUCH smoother idle with very little AFR change (varies between .1).

How close are the rx8 brackets to FC brackets? or did you unbolt the Rx8 seats and throw them on the FC rails?

PS: I like it!

If you look at the pics you can see the amount of adapting necessary. The FC brackets were removed from the sliders and bolted to the floor. The Rx8 rails were removed, all brackets and locating studs were removed, and the rails were reinstalled to the seats with a flat surface on the bottom (sliders intact). The Rx8 rails are almost two inches wider than the fc rails. In the pictures you can see some square stock that was used to "build up" the FC rails upward and outward to get the correct height. The rx8 seats were then placed on the new "brackets", lined up, and the sliders were then welded to them. The driver's side is relatively basic and consists of two rails as described, but the passenger seat is much more tricky. The seat height is determined by the trans tunnel and mounts, which is why the brackets had to be "built up" to match. It also needed slightly more creative welding to bolt to the factory locations. In the picture you can see that the FC section on the passenger inner bracket was welded to the front of the rail to provide the correct location. The entire rail basically sits on the trans tunnel. It makes more sense in person. Also, the passenger seat is sliding only, but the driver seat is power adjustable and the seat bottom can be lowered quite far. A 6'2" person has sat in both seats with his hair touching the top, but his hair is/was rather pointy. I'm 5'8" and have plenty of room. When a tall person sits in the car I just tell them to put the top down. Infinite headroom.

Its mostly the hair.

Fidelity101 08-30-2011 02:10 PM

yeah I'm 6'4" headroom is tight enough as it is (with the helmet on) once I delete the sunroof. shouldn't have an issue.

this reminds me of when I put Sentra Spec V seats in my old 240sx hatch.
