How important its it? Mine just broke all the wires off of it reinstalling it, do i need to worry about it, or should i try to repair it?

Stock ECU reads it.

OD switch is also read by the stocker ECU....

I use mine for start in gear protection and for my remote start

I can't remember if FD's have this as well, if so that would work great with a remote start, yes I do realize this is the 2nd gen section...

Test the switch well...
I used it as the gnd for a relay that allows power to pass through it for ththe remote start

30 bucks aint bad, hopefully the local dealer has one in stock

Thats exactly what I would want it for... I want that new alarm the 'drone' I think it's called.... Everything is done via internet/SMS and you can track your cars local by GPS too.... But I did not want to put in one if I could not use a neutral safety switch easily.... Thank Goodness Mazda has a habit of over engineering some things :P

alright, what the fuck does the ecu read it for? I think im going to try to "repair" it tonight, and hope i can make it work. I called 3 dealers this morning and the earliest they could get it would be next week, which is too far away.

To let the ECU know that your in gear so it can anticipate the car being driven.

It's timing related and idle speed control (BAC) and deceleration control (fuel cut) related among other things. See manual.

Mazda isn't special in having a neutral switch.

So, the switch is open when its in gear, and closed when it is in neutral? so in leaving the switch alone not plugged in, it always thinks its in gear, right, so there really shouldn't be any harm in just leaving it?

Idle and afr's might be a little wonky

I don't have my wiring diagram handy but is the neutral switch also connected to the ignition switch (i.e. can't start car w/o clutch depressed)?

The neutral switch isn't the same as the clutch switch, cause you can start the car in gear as long as the clutch is depressed. The neutral switch is in the transmission, and the clutch switch is under the dash i believe.

You are correct. If the clutch switch fails, you cannot start the car. If the clutch switch is out of adjustment, you can't start the car. They're good to have though, even though mine is bypassed for the bump start and the remote start, but that's why I have the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch fails, neither the remote start or the bump start will work.

It's the interlock switch at the top of the clutch pedal thats in the start circuit. The lower clutch switch is for ECU information and cruise cut if installed.

Well here is the question. My car almost never idles, i let it idle for maybe 60 seconds before hitting the road, and my commutes are almost all highway. If i just put in the broken switch till next week when i get the new one, will that be ok? I won't have any detrimental effects, other than possibly worse mileage when i do stop at a light for 40 seconds?

Yes, but top of the clutch means the clutch must be on the floor for the circuit to close. If you put the clutch in, crank it and then lift the clutch slightly, the circuit opens and powewr to the starter is cut. Opposite holds true for the lower switch. Rest your foot on the clutch pedal with the cruise working and there is a chance it'll cut out.

Wow, with a lift and two other people it took me 4 hours to get a new transmission installed on my FC. The splines on the input shaft just didn't want to mesh with those in the clutch

Yea, i did it on jackstands myself. Got the transmission up in in under an hour, minus the driveshaft, that was another day
