Wow, is that car running on the stock ECU? The fuel there must be very high octane if it did not blow up yet.
|
runs on 91octane.
Also it has 720cc secondarys. I don't see why it would blow up with the stock ecu just because of porting and a bigger turbo when i'm only running 7psi. |
Something about the extra amount of flow compared to the stock turbo at the same pressure level, causing it to go a bit lean. Do you have a Wide Band oxygen sensor to monitor the AFR ratios? I'm curious about how the afr's look under load.
Really, I'm just amazed to see this setup work, didn't know it was possible to run a different turbo w/o a standalone. |
No wideband yet. will get a haltech one when i buy the standalone.
|
Nice car. Those tail light rock.

Started on a sub box today,
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1291.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1292.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1296.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1294.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1293.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1297.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1298.jpg Finished box, lacks mounting point, and i will also make a coverup panel to make it look like it could have been stock ;) But for now it's ugly as sin... http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1299.jpg I'm going to buy a 11" Focal 27v2 at some point(wich will be mounted with the magnet in to the box), but for now i made a spacerplate and mounted a old 12" sub i had layin around. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1300.jpg |
Changed my mind and made new spacers for the old sub so it could be mounted with the magnet in to the box.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1301.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1303.jpg painted it black to protect against moisture. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1304.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1305.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1306.jpg Fits like a glove:) WHen i buy a new sub it won't build outwards so much. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1307.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1308.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1310.jpg started on amp and power cap mounting plate http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1316.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...o/IMG_1317.jpg |

Got the downpipe welded
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1330.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1332.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1333.jpg I'm waiting for a new oil feed line, since the old one had seen better days. Started on updating the ground points in the engine bay, will need to get some shrinkwrap so i can stop using the tape. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1327.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1329.jpg |
The last shots look familiar, the interior is a pain on the FC, but it has to be fixed sometime...
I see you used the opportunity to run power to your subs - good idea, do it right and it probably won't short out and leave you stranded. Looks good so far. By the way Max777, the engine is typically the driving factor in air flow rate at a given boost level. With the intake air pressure (boost) kept constant, I can only think of two methods that the air flow rate through the engine could increase by merely changing the turbo: Method 1: More dense air (cooler charge) due to a more efficient compressor. This actually helps the engine keep from detonating. Method 2: Lower exhaust backpressure due to a more efficient turbine - decreases the exhaust reversion which lowers the intake air temperature... once again decreasing the tendency to detonate. The project looks good! |
Found some more rust, and the worst i've seen on the car so far. Still it's not to bad for a car from 86 :)
And on the bright side, i should become fairly good at welding once i'm done with the rust repair. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1400.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1398.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1399.jpg |

Good progress. Much rust on the underbody?
|
No, the underbody was done by the last owner, and from what i can tell the only place there is rust under the car is on the rear tow hook :D
I tried the mig today, probably going to take a little while before i'm good enough to weld anything on the car tho. |
Gas tank is out, so now i can start prepping and welding :)
Also took of the entire exhaust to get rid of all leaks, and to get rid of the tension in the downpipe. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6403892_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1873402_n.jpg |
Welded up everything that had to be welded, but my dad wants the garage back since he wants it for his new car :/ so i haveto start putting the car back togheter, and postpone the full restoration until i have a place of my own.
Anyway, New stuff from mazdatrix http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1495.jpg Gasket for oil pan, defroster covers, spark plugs, fuel filter with mountings, rotary key ring and some mazdatrix stuff + candy :D |
Some parts for the downpipe/wastegate arrived today :D
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/DSC_0043.jpg |
More parts :D
Turbo timer (previous owner installed a non watercooled turbo :/ ) Banzai racing oil pan brace TCS rear camber adjuster Greddy elbow http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1496.jpg |
Finally got time to work a little on the car, installed most of the interior, removed fuel lines and changed fuel filter.
Only got pictures of the interior tho. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1497.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1498.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1501.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1502.jpg (FC guys know why i took this pic :D) http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...g/IMG_1500.jpg |
Got the exhaust all welded up, only need to change oil, oilgasket and mount the banzai oil pan brace before i'm ready for emission testing :)
Feels realy good firing it up again :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upYfMjkfiqk |
Made a buttplug for the exhaust, it's only a temporary solution until i can either modify or make a new exhaust.
But the sound is much lower, so it's livable inside the car now, + it's easy to remove for trackdays and general spirited driving :D http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/DSC_0202.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/DSC_0203.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtujp6dypM0 |
Quote:
Just mounted a wide band, the car doesn't have plates on it now, so i just have idle numbers. It runs a bit rich to say the least, 10-10.5 AFR on idle. Will post numbers i get under load when i get it on the road again :) |
Made a temporary holder for my gauges.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/IMG_1503.jpg And finally fixed the oil leak, put in a new gasket and a oil pan brace with studs, :D http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/IMG_1504.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/IMG_1505.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/IMG_1506.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/IMG_1507.jpg |
Mounted some "styling" on the rear tow hook :D
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/IMG_1523.jpg |
Bought some different wires and accesories to clean up the engine bay, the gauge holder is for my Neon. Looking forward to getting started working on my car's, summer vacation FTW :D

Looks good, was it a pain to put in that oil pan brace with the engine installed? I have one that i still need to install.
|
Well i was in a garage with a garage pit, and i had help. But no it wasn't to difficult, just as long as you support the engine properly so it doesn't move when you take off the engine mount. The first time i had a jack underneath but the engine still shifted enough to make it a pita to get the engine mount back on, and with the engine further down the studs where almost impossible to get in some places, so i used some 2"4" and supported the engine from the top and it didn't move at all.
You can use an allen key on most of the studs, but on the front row i used two nuts thightened agains each other, and a little ratchet with and extender and a angle thingy(picture i don't know what it's called in english), it's a bit fiddly but it's doable. Also a warning, it's probably not possible to get the oil pan on without scratching agaisnt the studs, so i had the sealent on the block, not the pan. http://extranet.bahco.com/catalogue/...esuffix=normal |
Got started on tearing down, semi wiretuck and tb mod are among the stuff i plan to get done :)
Tmic, UIM, TB and vacumpipes are of the car. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1525.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1526.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1527.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1530.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1535.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1536.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1542.jpg Alot of unecessery when only 2 fuel lines and 3 vacuum lines where in used. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1540.jpg Anybody know what this is for? can i remove it? :D http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1538.jpg |
assuming this is map sensor and FCD, shouldn't the vacum pipe be connected somewhere?
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1566.jpg Anybody know what this green plug is for? the wire runs by a relay out to the headlight, but not shure where it actually end's up. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1564.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1563.jpg Anybody know what theese to are? http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1556.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1555.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1558.jpg New wires for 02 and water temp :) http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...k/IMG_1552.jpg |
Did the TB mod :)
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...d/IMG_1574.jpg Stuff that came off the tb. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...d/IMG_1576.jpg made some cover plates instead of using threaded plugs like the Fc3spro how to says. This way it's possible to return the tb to stock again. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...d/IMG_1575.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...d/IMG_1573.jpg |
Got my ebay intercooler piping kit today, quality seems to be ok, only thing that i can complain about is that the paintjob isn't the best i've ever seen, a bit of dust and scratches in the paint, but that can always be fixed later on, will probably scratch the paint more when i'm installing it anyway.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1585.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...r/IMG_1589.jpg |
One week until trackweekend, and it turns out i have a oil leak, last time i changed the oil pan it didn't make a seal+ it looks like i have some other small leaks or sweatting that i need to tend to. I decided i need to take the engine out in order to get the leaks fixed properly, it's just to much oil slowly running down to the gasket surface, and im guessing that's the reason it leaks now.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1596.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1597.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1600.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1601.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1604.jpg |
Ill just let the pictures speak for themselves.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1605.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1606.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1607.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1608.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1609.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1610.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1611.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1612.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1613.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1614.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1615.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1616.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1617.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1618.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1619.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1620.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1621.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1622.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1623.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1624.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1625.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1626.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1627.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1628.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1629.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1630.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1631.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1634.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1635.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...1/IMG_1636.jpg |
So i went to the track this weekend, went with a small oil leak, came home with a big oil leak and a blown turbo, only got about an hour or so out on the track, but all in all a good weekend, the three hour drive home with a blown turbo was a bit nerve wrecking tho.
Pictures will follow when i get them. So i need a new turbo, i plan to run 0.5bar until i brake the NA transmission and then turn up to 1 bar when i change in the T2 trans i have in my basement. I need something that delivers boost earlier than 5000rpm, the xspower turbo the last owner put on the car didn't deliver 0.5 before that. My car is streetported, external wastegate and has a T4 flange, any suggestions to wich turbo i should go with? |
|
Bought some stuff :D, Rtek 2.1 and everything needed is on it's way, best i could afford right now.
Also i'm going to buy a used Garrett T66 AR.96 journal bearing and not watercooled, still it should perform better than the XSpower T70 AR1.05 |
Picked up the new turbo, a bit bigger than i first tought. Might need to go with 1600 sec and 720 pri...
