Hey Logan, updates like these are by far my favorite Christmas present..
I dig the new oil pedestal. I now see exactly what you were talking about with the radiator mount. Logan can you snap another picture directly from the side. I want to see how much more room is left between engine and firewall.. Merry Christmas Gordon - cool new ideas going into your car. I don't know if we would have had to of move the engine back if not for (Logan can correct me if I am wrong) the fact that we are using Nextel radiator and oil cooler plus the stock ac condenser. The oil cooler is of a design I was not familiar with....nothing like a stock FC oil cooler. It looks more like a large flat yet thin radiator. I don't believe cooling is going to be an issue. Plus I am really excited about the engine moving back. I would not of minded a couple or more inches if the shifter could have been addressed properly. |
More pics, had to upload some more. Final shot of the radiator/oil cooler bolt on subframe. Next step will be getting it powder coated :)

Now time to construct the upper quick release bracket. It will double as a cooling panel too http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...a/DSC01291.jpg http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...a/DSC01292.jpg And Chris, here is the pics you requested. The 20b intake is narrower than the ITB setup we will be building. But you can see not much more room left to go back. :) http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...a/DSC01285.jpg http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...a/DSC01286.jpg |
Wow!!
It is so strange to have been so hands on with my car for so long. I lived for getting it to the state you received it in and now to be just watching from the wayyyy back seats. It is awesome seeing that intake in my engine bay. I know it will not be there.. Something way more exciting (ITBs) will be but I have been dreaming about a three rotor in a FC since about 1997. :hurray: :cheers2:  Oh, Logan, what about the hood latch. Do you think we can still use it or are we going to need to go to hood pins?? |
Yes we made everything fit and get to keep the hood latch :) You will notice however the safety latch is missing the handle. We removed it because there was no way to keep it with the oil cooler in place. BUT we are going to be adding a cable system so you can simply pull under the grill area to release the hood safety. Thought that would be a pretty trick solution. Also, what color did you want this subframe powder coated? I was thinking gold would be sweet, as its under the car. But its your choice :) Keep in mind that the next thing starting to be built will be the strut brace. Its going to be a elaborate piece and can be powder coated the same color if you wish.

Sounds great on the latch and cable.
Man, I am not ready to make the color decision at this moment. I was going to go with gold Advan wheels but that has changed. So, I pretty much have left the idea of gold wheels. I know the rear brakes calipers are gold but not to sure I want to go that route. I know by looking under your 3rd gen hood that you are not scared of radical colors. ;) Let me think about that. I might do something boring like flat or sating black. When do you need to know by?? I have kind of envisioned raw metal look for the strut brace. I understand that is not as easy as it sounds. If you have any ideas to accomplish that let me know. If it is not doable powder coating is fine. Does aluminum provide enough rigidity for a brace? Remember, it is not really a race car...it just thinks it is. By the way, since I didn't mention... That radiator, oil cooler, condenser set up is brilliant. It is absolutely beautiful and looks like it was designed by Mazda that way. Great Work!! |

While we are still working on the strut brace and underbody braces, figured I would post pics of the new rear calipers we finally sourced. We had some awesome brembo rears already, but they were not nickle plated. With a huge stroke of luck, got ahold of these PFC nickle plated mono-block rear calipers. Major find, and brand spanking new! I about died when I opened the box!

Started on the ITB intake system. We are hand building and machining the slide throttles. The lower flange was all machined and you can see the holes for semi p-ports. Slide assembly is just in the rough stages, I will post up completed pics here shortly showing the ball bearing assembly on the inside!

That looks pretty sweet!
Are you using teflon as the center slide or is that metal? It looks like metal...if so how do you seal against air leakage? |

This is why I started using the Todays Post button instead of the New Posts button... I totally missed the brakes! Those are gorgeous Chris! I'd love to see the brackets and the final product.... I'm actually ordering mine tomorrow ;)

I have to tell you that I just read some more about your car. It is absolutely amazing. I hope to see it in person some day. I won't be making it to DGRR this year. Next year I definitely will though... DGRR 2012!! |
