Ahem... Brian wasn't the only one spending LONG hours on that thing :toetap05:

JL1RX7 01-31-2013 02:58 PM

I know right Mike!

Fendamonky 01-31-2013 03:06 PM

:hands out whips and ball gags:

:suspect:

Do what you feel is necessary boys :naughty:

Fendamonky 02-03-2013 04:13 PM

Ok, so mild update:

I found a local shop that can/will fix the ding in the radiator at a minimal cost (yay!)

I also decided to go ahead with ANing my radiator setup :suspect: I pulled the WP and T-Stat housing off last night then measured out how much -16 line I'd need.

Summit sells Aeroquip "Starlight" hose in increments of 3', 6', 10', etc., etc. I measured out the amount of line I'd need and came up with 3'4"... Paying an extra $40 for 4" of line SUCKS!! Luckily it looks like Mike will be going a similar route with his radiator, so he's gunna help out with the cost for the extra 3'.

But yeah, parts list for converting your radiator from normal (with standard lines and clamps) to baller (nylon/nomex braided lines with AN fittings) is as follows:

3' of Aeroquip Startlite Racing Hose FCU1603 (you may need more depending on radiator setup) at $40.95

4x Summit Racing® Weld-In Bungs SUM-220064 at $8.95 per.

4x Aeroquip Reusable Hose Ends FBM4436 (I went with all 90 deg fittings for my setup) at $41.95 per.

So yeah, you're looking at right about $245 (plus shipping) in parts (individual costs may vary depending on fittings used and hose length) to convert over to AN radiator lines.

Once all the goodies arrive you will still need to find a welder to attach the weld-on -16 bungs to your radiator and WP/T-stat housings.

I'll be making the drive up to Brian this coming Friday with my radiator and WP housing. Ideally he'll have received a big box of goodies from Summit and will have been able to make my replacement T-Stat cover/filler neck (attaching my AST directly to the WP Housing). That way when I arrive it will be a quick handy, some cutting/welding, then surprise buttsecks before I drive the 200 miles back home.

DriFD3S 02-05-2013 08:09 PM

Hope the build goes well and you have a great engine!!
Go Fendamonky!!!

About that..... I didn't get anything today.... so we'll have to see how much I get done on the AST thing...
And there will be no surprise buttsecks.... taking away time from the woman and me leaving 2+hours late for a 5hr drive means I AM GOING TO RAPE YOU!!!!!

JL1RX7 02-06-2013 02:57 PM

So when is this rape going to happen?

Anything today? I dropped the idler pulley in the mail the other day, you should have it now hopefully. One thing, i packed my favorite dirka rag with the pulley. Please hoof on to that for me.

Also, it looks like I'm gunna be off with even earlier than I expected on Friday, I think I may be bringing Bianca up with me. The radiator got dropped at the shop today, I'll be picking it up tomorrow, just gotta coordinate with Mike to get the painting parts.

:happy_dance:

As long as I can watch more home movies like you posted the other day I am always willing!

4x Summit Racing® Weld-In Bungs SUM-220064 at $8.95 per.

4x Summit Racing® Hose Ends SUM-220587N These hose ends won't work well with Aeroquip lines at $21.95 per.

4x Aeroquip Reusable Hose Ends FBM4436 (I went with all 90 deg fittings for my setup) at $41.95 per.

I unfortunately realized, after test fitting and talking with Summit Tech Support, that the Summit Hose Ends will not work with the Aeroquip hose. Their rule of thumb is to NOT mix and match brands between hoses and hose ends. Since Summit does not make a hose larger than -12 you will need to go with all brand name (Aeroquip, Earls, Russel, etc., etc.)

WE3RX7 02-17-2013 09:55 AM

Been there before :) Sorry for the setback man...

Fendamonky 02-17-2013 11:06 AM

It's all good. It's actually not *too* bad, as I've not gotten my radiator and WP housing/AST back from Brian yet. Hopefully that will happen next weekend. That, and I've still gotta resolve that clutch fork issue (since I didn't put it in right to begin with... :suspect:). And, on the plus side... Summit cut me a small discount (10%) on the Aeroquip hose ends. That, along with free shipping, has helped save me a few pennies.

Once that's all done it will be time to heat cycle, heat cycle, heat cycle.. then find my way up to Speed1 and the break-in will commence!! :sifone: :cheers2::party:

That sucks. Did Brian tell you the bad news yet? You won't have your stuff done till my car is done. No cutting in line. :D

How is everything else?

:suspect:.... I would offer to fight you for it, but you've got some MASSIVE freaking bear paws... And frankly I find that just a bit intimidating :smilielol5:

JL1RX7 02-17-2013 02:50 PM

Hey Levi let me know if you need a hand with that clutch fork.

I wouldn't mess with MC. He could palm you crush you like a coke can and not even break stride moving up in line.

Yeah, I most likely will, lol. I should have asked you earlier in the week to come help this weekend, but I got distracted and forgot. Next weekend I'm going down to Charlottesville, so it may be in two weeks? (unless you're off tomorrow and you get bored, lol).

Seriously! lol.

2gslse 02-17-2013 05:03 PM

Its not that bad. I think it would be pretty evenly matched. I just wish I was in as good of shape as when I got out of the Navy when I was only 200 lbs on a med cruise I was a lot leaner and could be angry at times.

WE3RX7 02-17-2013 08:53 PM

At least you all are making car progress... I'm on house project duty all week. Just finished remodeling a powder room (thus why I keep missing your calls MC)... tomorrow is clean up and Tuesday starts flooring.

The way I see it, a solid week of home improvement grants me a year of on track indulgence :)

Levi - what's in C'ville?

C'ville is home for me. And.... I have a feeling that Bianca may be able to get a better deal on her wedding dress there (we haven't done the religious ceremony yet, but plan on doing that just before DGRR this year :coolgleamA:)

Oh, and the breweries around there make REALLY good beer, and it's cheap as shit to fill a 72oz Growler :sifone:

WE3RX7 02-18-2013 09:09 AM

Ah - I didn't know that you were from C'ville,or did I... hmm. Whit actually went to Old Town Alexandria to get her dress.. I guess it just depends.

We usually hit up Devil's Backbone every now and again. I'd offer to come have a beer, but the new one is still a bit too little for hanging around away from home!

When that beast of yours is up and running, you'll have to come down this way with Brian and we can do a mini-DGRR through the backroads of Skyline...

You should try South Street Brewery, just off the Downtown Mall inside of Charlottesville. They're damned good as well, I always bring a growler (or two) of beer from Charlottesville to DGRR, lol.

I'm thinking the springtime mountain cruise DEFINITELY sounds like a good idea =)

I'll kick you a PM on the rest, lol.

JL1RX7 02-19-2013 01:14 PM

Two weeks should be good for me if its good for you :)

Congrats on the wedding plans!

Speaking of getting your shit done.... I'm going up there next weekend for a break-in map. You wanna come with me to get your FB?

2gslse 03-03-2013 08:09 PM

If my car is done I will be trying to get it picked up. gotta see what work does this week but I'll know more as the week goes on. What day you planning on going up?

Fendamonky 03-04-2013 07:27 PM

We'll be heading up on Saturday. I contemplated towing your Fail Bucket back down, but I figure you'll def want to be the one bringing it home (ripping on it the entire way!) lol

JL1RX7 03-04-2013 07:32 PM

Have the Miata tow the FB.... With a bright pink tow rope.....

Fendamonky 03-04-2013 07:44 PM

Also,

Had a little bit of head way last night. I spent the weekend down in Charlottesville taking care of some (looming) wedding planning. Sunday afternoon was for the car though.

Vlad came by and rescued me from my seized clutch slave cylinder, that was (surprisingly) a bitch to get out. So the clutch got fixed, then I focused my attention on the engine bay.

I flushed out the radiator after Brian (TitaniumTT) did some badass welding on it. The radiator is now rocking 2x -16 bungs and 1x -4 bung for the radiator hoses and an AST input (respectively).

Radiator fit in the engine bay.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps122e8a0d.jpg

The lower mounting point, and my (not so shiny) new radiator line.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...psef192cdb.jpg

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps3d4b0908.jpg

You might have noticed that I seem to be missing my T-stat/coolant filler neck. Technically that is correct... Brian wasn't satisfied with my old t-stat housing and AST arrangement, so he figured "what the hell" and decided to combine the two parts into one! I'm pretty impressed with how well it worked out, and def satisfied!!

Test fitting the new AST.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps87bf75de.jpg

Here's where my "AST/Filler neck" will connect to the upper radiator "hose", with the Tweakit Idler pulley in the background.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps81be061a.jpg

Testing out the length needed for my upper rad hose.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps35d82549.jpg

This afternoon I finished putting the belts/alternator/etc on and gave the AST one more (last) coat of silver paint, than came upstairs to change out of my uniform. After dinner I'll go back down and cut my last radiator line, then modify my AST lines to fit.

Once that's done it's just a matter of mounting up the intercooler, installing the battery, then firing her up for her (second) heat cycle!!

JL1RX7 03-04-2013 07:47 PM

So the slave was seized up on you? You get another one put in? Looking good!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I just snagged Vlad's spare one for the cost of a rebuild kit.

Lol, seriously. I SOOO wanna run around with you once my FD is broken in. I just want to (be able to keep up, and) see the looks on peoples faces when their lambo gets SMOKED by an early/mid-80's toy car

JL1RX7 03-04-2013 07:56 PM

Get a few heat cycles in it and a base tune and you should be able to play with the FB! You are so right about the look on their faces getting smoke checked by 30 plus year old car!

Glad you got that done. I figured cracking the lines would be the hardest part. I hate those fittings with a passion. They never like to break easy even with channel spanners.

GySgtFrank 03-04-2013 08:01 PM

Dang that's looking really nice Levi. I needs a ride.
