Looks like a camaro and a bmw had a kid. kinda ugly but cool. An dont hate the 12a its not the best but tuned right they can scare the pants off you. my rx 7 1983 is probably lighter and leaks oil bad but it still kicks ass in the local street drift races. an noe that i have it hitting over 60 mph in a city block im happy till i get the 5 grand to finish my 13B build

djmtsu 01-03-2014 07:46 AM

Sorry man, you lost me with 'local street drift races.'

reddozen 01-03-2014 09:47 AM

Not sure, but one might be a Courier, not a Repu. Charles can confirm I'm sure.

I thought you said you couldn't weld? :squint:

djmtsu 01-05-2014 06:33 PM

Wasn't me :-)

A friend did the cutting and welding.

TitaniumTT 01-05-2014 09:16 PM

That is the master plan. Engine is broken down and awaiting seals. Frame is repaired, need to pick the car up and bring it back home.

The rear axle is the ONLY major piece of work that needs to be done. Its going to be almost 60 degrees this weekend, so maybe we can get that done.

TitaniumTT 01-06-2014 01:11 PM

Buy a heater and no more excuses

I have one! Last time I used it, it got up to about 88 degrees in the garage. Then I was too hot!!

Build problems....

djmtsu 01-12-2014 09:45 AM

Repaired.

silverfdturbo6port 01-12-2014 06:00 PM

I found a 78 cosmo on friday out in the country. He is interested in selling it. It ran when parked and is a really solid car compared to the other cosmos i have had. Its all complete and it looks like the interior needs most the work as its aged.

djmtsu 01-12-2014 06:04 PM

Get that shit and share parts!!

(Seriously)

silverfdturbo6port 01-13-2014 01:18 AM

Eh we will see. I just got rid of a 77 recently. I want a rx3 or rx2

Yeah, I mean if he's wanting to get rid of it for a couple hundred, its worth it. Couple thousand, no way.

Also, I think I PM'd you on the other forum about a steering wheel, but you had already sold it :(

silverfdturbo6port 01-14-2014 01:41 AM

I agree. Yea that steering wheel was out of it. I still have a set of louvers for a cosmo.

djmtsu 01-14-2014 06:37 AM

I've never seen louvers for the Cosmo. I take it they look similar to the ones for RX-3's?

2gslse 01-14-2014 08:59 AM

Seeing your progress makes me start thinking about working on my old cosmo. sadly I have neglected it for way too long.

Get on it! From the looks of things on Facebook, and on other forums, they are making a small comeback in popularity.

Or........hand it over to me :)

TitaniumTT 01-14-2014 11:33 AM

Wait..... MC... you have a Cosmo?!?!??!?

DJ.... what are you doing for the rear end again?

1998 Mazda MPV rear axle. 5 lug, disc, internal drum parking brake (like the Cosmo), 5 link (like the Cosmo) and has the ability to run an upgraded diff (RX-8).

Another bonus is gearing. The stock is like 3.63. 2wd MPV's have 3.90, and 4wd has 4.10's.

It is a couple inches wider on each side than stock. But that is why fender flares were invented....

had 1 for years. Built the engine for it and then had my accident in the th and got put on the back burner will do more to it when the fb is done. If you ever come this way I'll show it to ya. Thinking about a resorts to black cherry to offset the chrome and maybe swap out the 4 port for a 6 port injection like the rx3 for the deliverability and economy since its heavy and will be a cruiser only

Heavy? In stock trim, they weight as much as an S4 NA Sport. That's not too shabby for something that is damn near 100% steel! At least that is what mine weighs.

Of course, the MPV axle and FC suspension stuff will add to it, but removing the A/C and many other crappy do-dads will help....a little.

JL1RX7 01-14-2014 01:11 PM

DJ remember this is the guy with 410 HP 13b in a first gen. EVERYTHING feels heavy to him!

djmtsu 01-21-2014 07:07 AM

My rear axle plan, isn't going to work. That bitch was wayyyyy too wide.

So, going GSL-SE with a 5 lug conversion.

Stay tuned, still collecting parts.

Whizbang 01-21-2014 10:20 AM

well it is a cruiser car all told.

Sport coupe, because rotary.

Now the Road Pacer, that is a cruiser....

silverfdturbo6port 01-21-2014 01:05 PM

If i recall correctly the 8.8 rear ends are almost a direct bolt in for the cosmos and first gens. A buddy of mine has a 350 in his first gen with a 8.8 and it looks like it fit pretty well.

djmtsu 01-21-2014 01:17 PM

8.8 is a heavy bitch, of course, this MPV axle is heavy as fuck too.

Also, it needs to be cut down on one side to center the pinion. Not going that route at this time. Also remember, this is a 70's Mazda, which means NARROW. Hell, a GSL-SE axle is about 1.5" wider on each side than the Cosmo, and an 8.8 would be another 1" over that.

So GSL-SE with 5 lug it is.

djmtsu 01-21-2014 01:23 PM

For reference, the MPV axle is just a little wider than an 8.8.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j...-no/temp_5.jpg

It would work great for a widebody FB though. Centered diff, 5 lug, 5 link.

You can use the GSL axles and brake brackets. It will narrow it about an inch overall than the stock GSL-SE. I actually had Moser shorten and machine the bearing seats another 1/2" outward to shorten mine up enough for what I was doing, had to make my own brake brackets though. Still had more than sufficient room on the stock axle tubes to install discs. Overall I'm probably about 2" narrower than the stock GSL-SE track width (1" per side) was when I got it. Even this would leave you about 1/2" wider per side. There is enough room to machine and shorten the axles another quarter inch or so per side, but it would be pushing it to go much beyond that and would probably require shortening of the axle tubes.

FerociousP 01-21-2014 01:35 PM

In the words of Adler..... Flares!

(and in this case high offset wheels)

Sucks its so wide. would have been a good axle.

Yep.

But damn, the flares would have to be about 5-6" It was look like an IMSA car, or bosuku.

The axle might come in handy anyway. Been looking at something else for the next project.......

Anyone want to buy an S4 FC? Cheap?

djmtsu 01-27-2014 01:28 PM

GSL-SE axle acquired.

Cleaning side seal grooves is the devil.

djmtsu 02-21-2014 09:48 AM

Still working on her. Slowly however, since I need to be frugal with money until I find a new job.

Engine should be built soon. Carb is rebuilt. Some surface rust and dings are being fixed. I also installed a new steering column bushing. What a huge difference that has made!! The A/C components are almost all out, just need to get into the passenger side under dash and see how the evaporator is connected to the hoses. I would rather not cut the lines going through the firewall, but it is what it is.
