If you two kids don't stop fighting I'm gunna turn this fucking car around!!!....

But seriously, if the gear is the same and the only difference from 7 to 8 is the bearings.... I'm just gunna get 8 bearings and reuse my 7 stat gears.

Does this sound plausible?

C. Ludwig 02-27-2014 04:40 AM

There is supposed to be a slight difference in the gear that makes the 8 more suitable for high revs, but they're interchangeable. The whole 8 gear/bearing isn't a whole lot more than the bearing itself. Even closer in price once you factor in having someone press the bearing for you and how many they'll possibly screw up.

The oil passages of the 8 gear do not properly line up with the 7 irons. A little work with a die grinder fixes that issue.

Yeah, the gears are around a hundred dollars more than the bearings. I'm leaning towards the thought of just putting the 8 bearings in because I have the press tool for main bearings and rotor bearings, and my neighbor has a press that I can use.

Since I'm REALLY short on extra money right now (moving and had to hire a lawyer for work related stuff) I'm trying to cut out unnecessary expenses.

Really? I was under the impression that the main alignment issues between 7/8 was from the stat gears to the e-shaft... if the 8 stat gear doesn't line up right with the 7 iron (without modification) than that's one more reason to just swap bearings (unless I'm misunderstanding what you said).

So I got the keg cracked open last night. Well... I got the rear stat gear and the studs out, along with the front stack and stat gear. The rear stat gear didn't want to slide off easily, so I gave it a couple gentle taps with a hammer and block of wood, it came right out.

Both stat gears look good, the bearings are obviously needing replacement, but nothing is spun so far.

I had to stop breaking the engine down last night because the wife was tired/hungry and we had already agreed to grab chinese food for dinner  I pulled the rear iron this morning before work, the iron looks great, the rotor looks great. Photobucket is being a bitch right now so I'm having issues uploading pics... I'll dump the pics in when I'm able to get them from my phone to the interwebs..

Fendamonky 02-27-2014 05:21 PM

Ok... Pic dump from last night.

Disassembly of the front stack:

Off goes the front CW, looks good, slides around fine, everything seems good (aside from the stat gear bearings, they need fresh ones pressed)

These guys look just fine

Each part went into it's own sandwich bag, then came (gently) into here.. NOT planning on misplacing anything

Left with this in the front.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...psj01d1wum.jpg

After the front was disassembled I pulled up the FSM and started loosening nuts to get the studs out. (And yes... it would seem there was a slight coolant leak
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...psn30ledga.jpg

By the time I got the studs out my wife was getting aggravated with me... She had gotten home about an hour earlier and wanted Chinese food for dinner (I needed to go out and get it ... A happy wife is a happy life, so I obey when it comes to fattening her up :suspect:). I went slightly out of order per FSM disassembly and cracked the rear stat gear off before removing the iron. A couple (relatively) gentle blows from the hammer/block of wood unseated the bearing and it came right off.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...psbkehmmxj.jpg

I don't know about you... but that bearing looks pretty damned good considering it ran without oil for a minute or so!! (I'm still gunna swap that out though, not taking any fucking chances!!)

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...psnyttpkmt.jpg

I did notice some odd marks on the stat bearing though... It looks like it either received pitting (without any sign of rust) or it did not fully smooth down a roughed finish on the metal.. I have no idea if that's normal or not..

Again though, the bearing looks remarkably un-mangled!!

Here's the view I was left with last night when I left the engine for the evening..

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...psvefdxik3.jpg

This morning said "fuck that shit" and pulled the rear iron off while waiting for the car to warm up..

Rotor looks good... and it lifted on the e-shaft easily, so at least I know that THAT bearing isn't completely fucked and fused to the e-shaft..

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps9tnc3btq.jpg

You can tell that it looks like the e-shaft may have blued slightly though... BUT!! The Oil Control Rings look fine to my novice eyes (god PLEASE let them be good!!! Too many monies..)
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps390uhcn1.jpg

The Iron looks fine, though I didn't get a picture of it uploaded. Thank god for race clearanced rotors!!!

Fendamonky 02-27-2014 08:01 PM

Welp.... I've got my motor fully stripped. Good news and bad news..

Good news is that both Stat Gears came out fine (new bearings would be good though), and the rear rotor is pristine. My irons look good and the housings seem great as well..

Bad news... the front rotor is pretty fucked up. The rotor bearing walked out about 1/2 an inch and is COMPLETELY thrashed. The rotor tips look like they def made some contact with the center iron (though oddly the center iron doesn't show any corresponding damage). I don't know if that rotor is salvageable or not.. I still need to remove/organize all its seals and clean it up some.

TitaniumTT 02-27-2014 08:10 PM

Rotor is a nice new paperweight.
Send the iron to Chip for some cleanup and grinding/renitrating. The rotor clearly touched SOMETHING. just because you can't see damage, doesn't mean it's not there.
On that note I would throw the front stat gear and front stack in the trash

I'm not trying to go all HC/BDC/JM Imports here... But why trash the front stack as well? They all look just as good as when they went in a few thousand miles ago.

TitaniumTT 02-28-2014 01:55 PM

Because pieces of bearing material went through the entire engine. I wouldn't trust them, and I would definitely be replacing the oil pump.

You want to spin 8500+, make a gazillion hp, all the time and money going into the build, why skimp out on $100 worth of bearings and $150 pump? Sense, it makes none to me. I would also trash the front stat gear because it looks like it got too hot, I wouldn't trust it, I wouldn't use them, but that's me. Lost of people do shady shit and get away with it. I am not one of those people to try to skimp out when spending $10,000 on an engine.
