Update your signature, something is gone from that list and something else is missing.

This may be an obnoxious question but were you shooting to be able to run this car for this season? When do things start where you are? We started at the end of last month.

First National event I'm scheduled to run is mid May. Our local clubs first event was March 30th, with the second event April 20th. May make that race.

I know you won't let me drive it, except on the dyno, maybe, but I want a ride:eek:

Dan

I bet we can have it running by next weekend for sure. With or without Brian. Btw, please don't drop the motor on my hand this time.

Actually, I have to thank Dan for allowing me to borrow some tools and floor space while pulling the head on my MR2 Turbo. What ever he says about me holding up his progress is wrong :leaving:

I was wondering if you had finished it. I just finished looking on the tr site to see if you raced but didn't see you. However, one of my soldiers that is here with me in Afghanistan apparently raced in Nashville yesterday according to the results on the website... lol.

Now that is a long haul to get back and race :D!

Dan, can't wait to see her on the track. Everything looking good. See ya Tuesday.

Chadwick 04-27-2008 11:18 PM

First and second post update with a bunch more pictures.

We started the car today and it is purring like a kitten but we did have a little drama getting there.

Yesterday we buttoned everything up and started to fill her with fluids. When she got about ¾ full of water a small leak was apparent. It looked to be coming from the coolant supply hose to the turbo. We took off the hose, inspected it and the fitting then re-clamped it. To our surprise it was leaking even worse. That is when we noticed the water was coming out of the fitting that is pressed into the water pump housing, not the hose:001_07:. We had to tear everything back off the front of the motor and replace the housing. While Brian, Andrew and I worked on getting everything back together, Mike polished the crap out of my Greddy Elbow and intercooler :drool5:.

With the water leak fixed Brian wired up the FJO injector driver and I wired up the Jacobs and we were ready to turn the key. Brian cranked her for about 6 seconds and she started to fire but he had already committed to releasing the key. He hit it again and she fired on the second crank. Right from the start she idled super smooth and only kicked out smoke for around 5 minutes. Andrew and I adjusted the fuel pressure and we let her get up to temp watching for any leaks the whole time. That is when we noticed a mist of what we thought was water coming from somewhere on the front of the engine. It was being slung by the belts and making a mist so it was really hard to tell where it was coming from. I had Brian kill the engine.

With the engine off it became obvious that it was not water but oil that was being slung and we could see right where it was coming from, the front bolt on the eccentric shaft.:o10: Brian and Andrew pulled the piping and intercooler and we removed the bolt to find the crush washer had shifted when it was torque down. I promptly threw the crush washer in the trash. Brian applied a layer of RTV to the bolt and we reinstalled it.

We installed all the plumping back and fired her up for the second time. Maybe 2 or 3 cranks and she fired right up, this time with no leaks. We let her run for about 30 minutes and check all the pressures and temps. She is pulling 16-18 of vacuum at idle which is great for having all new seals and running for less than an hour total.

We all seem to think she has a deeper tone then before with a little stronger pop to the exhaust pulses.

Hopefully we can get everything else button down this week and get her on the dyno next weekend.

Stay tuned,

Dan

Brent 04-28-2008 09:34 AM

are you using stock or 99spec turbo's? Man, I wish I was around to see it! You done anything with the carputer?

sbrian2 04-28-2008 11:44 AM

They are 99spec. It was a frustrating weekend at times, but the payoff was worth the trouble. I told Dan we couldn't go home this weekend until it was running, so we accomplished our goal.

ACowden20 04-29-2008 10:32 PM

I think we all felt a little defeated after the water leak on Saturday. Well that and when we found I had "forgot" to hook up the fuel pump after I installed it a few months ago.

fire85gslse 04-29-2008 10:52 PM

Dan, thanks for the help tonight. It was good to see you all.

Garfinkles Motor Works 04-30-2008 08:27 AM

I just saw this thread ,with all that torque you will need a garfinkle engine torque brace and a garfinkle oil pan brace for sure . Have you seen the garfinkle belt idler ,it is as nice as yours .

As Brian said, yes to the 99's. Wish you were around too, we will have some fun when you get back state side. We are currently working on the inside wiring (wideband, Dual EGT, Datalogit and Carputer) so I should have an update in a couple of days. We were going to work on some of it last night but ran into a high idle issue and a sensor not working. Resolved both of those so it is back onto the wiring.

Oil pan brace is already on and we should be installing the torque brace this weekend. Like everything else you make your airpump delete idler pulley is a work of art. We just took two different paths to achieve the same goal.

The thread looks good Dan. For the record, I am not responsible for any blindness resulting from polished parts.

Garfinkles Motor Works 05-01-2008 09:05 PM

Do polished parts make you blind ,what shall I do . Dan can not have his engine torque brace link unless I get a ride .

hahaha, of course you can have a ride.

Updated the second post with some picture after I added the second element to the wing. I have decided that the second element needs to be about 1" lower and will do that first thing in the morning.

Seems we have chased down most of the gremlins and should be putting her on the dyno tomorrow right after we finish up the internal wiring. The dual EGT and XD-16 guage are working great; just have to install the Tripower gauge pod in the right place. I'm pretty impressed with the XD-16, very nice display and easy to read even sitting on the passenger floor board :D.

After a week of heat cycles on the motor it is now pulling 18"-19" of vacuum at idle which I have down to 900rpm now. Air fuel is low to mid 12's so I have some tuning to do. It also has a pretty bad lean tip in that I will have to work out.

Dan

Chadwick 05-04-2008 10:58 PM

Ran into several issues today installing the carputer and LCD. Took us almost 8 hours to finish off the wiring and get the interior all back together.

We had another RX7 come into for a fender roll and tune so I never got my car on the dyno. We will be putting some breakin miles are her tomorrow and get her on the dyno around mid week.

The list of things to get done is getting shorter:
  1. Install Kazz LSD and 4.77 ring and pinion
  2. Pull off front bumper and hood, prime and put back on.
  3. Install undertray, front spoiler, feed side skirts, front combo lights and oil cooler ducts
  4. Alignment and corner balance
  5. Install surge tank cover
  6. Tune
  7. Mount Hoosier A6’s on wheels

ACowden20 05-04-2008 11:10 PM

So thats what you were doing over there all day. All I got done with putting a timing belt on and getting a motor mount reinstalled.

Very close. All I have left to install is the turbo parts, change the fluids, and hopefully start it up tomorrow night.

She came in at 2918 with 250 lbs of weight to balance out for me so she is right at 2668 lbs without my oversized ass. We dialed in a 50/50 split on the corner weights and for the first time the rear weighs more than the front. Split front to rear is 49.3% front, 50.7% rear. It must be the big wing making down force even when the car isn’t moving.

My alignment specs are as follows:
Front Camber -2.2
Front Toe .14
Caster 5.1
Rear Camber -2.3
Rear Toe -.16

Nice weight. I weighed my 93 R1 with A/C and air pump and full tank of gas (maybe 2 gallons shy of full) recently at the track. Total weight (w/o driver) was 2,802. The only thing I removed from the car was the spare tire.

Broke down as follows:
DF = 723 PF = 659
DR = 715 PR = 704

Not sure how level the scales were as this was at the track testing for min weight at a NASA event.

I'd love to get some feedback on your caster when you get the car out. Which hopefully will be soon. :)

Good luck.

Dan, crush washer on the e-shaft bolt?

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of RTV, if Mazda would of design the crush washer correctly it would be in my opinion the best solution. Unfortunatly they never made it right and just eliminanted after 93. In the future I will find one that is a better fit than the OEM or have some made.

We have a ProSolo next weekend in Atlanta and then a Tour the week after that.

I feel pretty good about the way she was handling and running for her first event. She is detuned about 110hp off her target hp and I still managed to be the forth fastest car for the event. I really notice the lack of power in a few areas, but I think my biggest problem was my driving. I haven't raced since last November and that was in a totaling different car.

One thing I’m happy to report is the fuel starvation cover works!!! I had her down to less than a ¼ tank without fuel starvation. The course had two fairly fast left hand sweepers that would have starved her at ¾ a tank before. When we install the cover I notice that one of the internal tank baffles has detached itself so I’m going to take the opportunity to upgrade to a 95 tank.

Also my airpump delete pulley held up to its first real test so I’m pretty happy about that.

We still haven’t installed the 4.77 or Kaaz which I think will really make her come alive.

We are going to install the boost controller and pre control pill this week and crank up the boost to have her ready for the ProSolo. The 4.77 and Kaaz may go in the following week.

Awesome build! I am very jealous...

I just wanted to make one comment about this:

You probably already know this, but when you loosen or remove that front eccentric shaft bolt with the engine in the car it can cause the thrust bearing to drop out of place. After a while the bearing, spacer, and thrust plate will wear down and possibly get chewed up and spit into the oil pan. This can also cause vibration and the bolt might end up removing itself after the bearing is completely destroyed. When that happens you are in a world of trouble. Don't ask me how I know...

Just something to think about...
