As for the Atkins seals... A good friend of mine refers to them as "fuses." Meaning that they usually let go before most of the other co's and when they do, they generally don't tear up the engine on their way out. I'd be curious as to what you find when you pull the thing apart. post pics, lots of them

On most parts of the map I definitely agree, 10s are too rich, but under boost I'd rather have 10 than 14 haha.

Some have been telling me to get RA seals this time, I might go ahead and do that even if these aren't bad. I guess a good thing about Atkins seals is if they don't tear up the engine when they break...trying to look on the bright side of all this haha. I'll post a lot of pics. I'm going to clean up the garage and work bench and start draining fluids tonight, tomorrow night I might start pulling.

No doubt... But the richest I run is 11.7:1 and generally keep it around 12.

I have the RA Super seals.... on the way back I hit something like 17:1 while @ 10lbs of boost... she dett'ed HARD and she's still ticking.

They each have thier benefits I suppose. From what I hear... the Atikins seals are gentle when they let go. So I'd be interested to see what your housings look like.

Duffman692002 01-26-2011 12:17 AM

List of to-do's: Rebuild, tires, radiator, clean up, enjoy.

ROTORX7Holly 01-26-2011 12:24 AM

Get a new set of tires.... Kumho's worn out.

yes i det'd on RA classis seals multiple times when i was learning how to tune.. engine survived and when it finally did go it was coolant seal failure

things to do before DGRR2011..
found out my bb hybrid somehow blew out the front oil seal, ordered a new seal and backplate, and sent it off to gpopshop to fix a pre-turbine exhaust leak problem. also the power steering is leaking from somewhere. and need to get sunroof welded shut

TitaniumTT 03-20-2011 09:01 AM

Title changed! How's are the lists progressing?

Buggy 03-20-2011 09:21 AM

Not worth a damn! Winter is dragging on and I can't get out to work on the car. I've got the rims basically done, the engine and 4 speed trans are ready to come out of the car, and I've got the front struts ready to be built. Still a pile of work to do.......

Sephitrask 03-20-2011 12:32 PM

Get some new tires for the rear, and bank enough cash for the gas to get there.

speedjunkie 03-20-2011 04:20 PM

1. possibly paint engine bay (but probably not) - Done
2. possibly install ducting for the VMIC - maybe when I get the engine back in, but I'll probably wait
3. hopefully new coil setup and reinstall cruise control - decided to stick with stock coils and put them back in stock location, and did reinstall cruise control right before the engine blew
4. possibly construct custom gauge pod setup/change gauges - too much of a PITA but I did change to SPA Techniques gauges and different pod setup, and moved EBC to DIN under stereo. Also installed cable connectors into DIN so you just plug in like the back of a computer in order to tune
5. get the front fenders modified to match the rear fenders - they are modified but they look like crap, I guess I'll have to do it myself
6. ss braided lines and reroute for water injection - Still trying to figure out what lines to buy. Might also buy some new oil cooler lines to run instead of the current SS braided lines.
7. possibly move battery again this time to storage bin behind passenger seat - haven't relocated battery again yet, but I am rerouting my power line to go straight to the starter instead of through the engine bay to the front.
8. help roommates get their FDs running/finished so they can go too - can't help them if they won't work on them themselves haha, but this is still going to happen
9. I also forgot I want to get some strut bar spacers made so I can get rid of the washers. - Done
10. rebuild engine - should be getting engine back this Tuesday, will dress it with accessories Wednesday and install by the weekend with any luck
11. replace BRAND NEW oil cooler that got ripped off while trying to pull start - Done
13. figure out why power steering is seeping - replaced all o-rings and the hose, so hopefully this works

I also got all IC piping, the IC, UIM, compressor housing, water pump housing and filler neck, A/C / P/S bracket and oil filler neck all powdercoated. Got the LIM, turbine housing, manifold and DP ceramic coated again, some other parts anodized and most of the various brackets and brake booster metal line all done in black oxide. I still have to figure out some way to paint or coat the throttle body and water pump so they will be black too, and may paint the power steering pump too, not sure yet. I also want to install a new P/S oil cooler line but I may wait to do that. Oh, I also finally hard mounted my relay box onto the front crossmember. I'm probably forgetting some things even. I've been a busy boy. But if I can get leave I'll definitely be at DGRR.

Damn, what a list!!!! Good luck!

speedjunkie 03-20-2011 10:15 PM

Thanks! I love working on it almost as much as I love driving it lol, and usually once I start working on it I get on a roll and finish a lot.

IH8DSM 03-21-2011 12:11 AM

My list is for the most part is done now it's just 2nd checks and yearly matinence

djmtsu 03-21-2011 06:40 AM

Well, I bought a couple first gens since this thread was started.

So far I have-
Ordered a shitload of parts
Swapped in a LSD disc rear end
Looted another FB for most of the interior
BBS wheels
Holley Carb kit
MSD 6AL
Holley Blue fuel pump/regulator

Waiting on installing the front springs, rears are done. And trying to locate an exhaust system, or at least a 12a header.

speedjunkie 03-21-2011 04:55 PM

^So are you bringing one of the first gens or something else?

I am bringing the '84 GS. Sorry, no Cosmo.

Had to order a stud kit to use the BBS wheels. That sucks, but at least I won't have stupid wheel bolts anymore. Lol. The MSD showed up today, fuel pump shipped today, new brake booster shipped today. So things are coming along.

All the parts should be here by the weekend, so I can get to wrenching (again). At least this time it won't be as labor intensive as single handedly swapping rear axle assemblies, by myself, in the driveway. Charles is rebuilding the Holley carb, and getting it set up to drop it (very thankful). I need to get the car over there to put in an FC oil cooler and take off the window trim to be powdercoated.

Then, back to the house to start smoothing the body for paint!

Someone needs to hook me up with a glass sunroof!! And a header, and a muffler.

Poop.

Rebuild-Check
Clean up-Check
Tire-Next pay check
Radiator-Soon

So the major one is done, gotta get my break-in miles before leaving. Can't wait. :D

speedjunkie 04-04-2011 01:20 AM

Got the engine in and it started today, WOOHOO! However, it seems that now my alternator isn't putting out any power so my battery isn't charging. I'd really like to get the break-in miles done in time to get it tuned before coming out so I can REALLY have fun but I'm not sure I'll have enough money to get tuned AND come to DGRR.

TitaniumTT 04-04-2011 01:48 AM

Skip the tune and just dial in the cruise stuff.... there will be enough people there that know their way around a PFC that we should be able to get you up to WG dialed in to have some damn fun.

Lets see.... left on my list

6 spd
driveshaft
brakes
interior
new trigger wheel
new triggers front and rear
MC and prop valve
spare exhaust sleeves
BNR stage 3's
rewrap the exhaust
evac tank

damn... I've got ALOT to do.... oh, and of course
dyno.... going to crush and embarrass the last record :suspect:

speedjunkie 04-04-2011 09:21 AM

I'm not really worried about cruising AFRs and all that, I could do that myself. It's the "in boost" stuff that I'm not comfortable with haha.

And I think I figured out the alternator. They powder coated the insides as well as the outsides and I'm being told the alternator uses the housing as a current path, so I have to disassemble again and scrape off the coating in a couple places, I just have to figure out where to scrape lol.

speedjunkie 04-08-2011 02:45 PM

Well it looks like I won't be making it to DGRR, for a couple reasons, both tied to the same thing lol. Because of the gov't shutdown, I will be getting only half a paycheck AND all projected leave is cancelled until something is worked out lol. You guys have fun. Maybe I'll see you at DGRR12.

darthrotary 04-08-2011 03:05 PM

^ That seriously blows. Sorry to hear that man, I know a lot of people affected by it.

speedjunkie 04-08-2011 03:19 PM

Thanks! I wasn't sure I was going to make it because of money anyway, that and I'm not sure I'm 100% confident in the car just yet. Thanks though.

N.RotaryTech 04-08-2011 06:23 PM

AAHHHGGGGGG!!!!!!!
Working on my car going 1 step forward, 2 steps back.
3 weeks to go.
But I'm still pretty sure I'll get it finished in time.

TitaniumTT 04-09-2011 08:08 AM

Shutdown averted by 40 minutes..... sooooo that means you'll be attending right??? ;)

I was 40 minutes away from not going either!!! HAHA

I'm still in.

speedjunkie 04-11-2011 01:43 AM

^Where are you driving from?

I might still be in, still depends on money LOL, and I still have to ask if leave was still affected even though they didn't shut down. I've got a little over 100 miles on the rebuild at this point, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get the rest of them completed before the trip but my AFRs and EG temps look decent so I'm not too worried. I just told Zico I might still go, but he and Simon aren't going anymore. I'm not sure about others around here.

Apparently Simon still got only half a paycheck, so I have to check mine now too. But hopefully even if we did we will get the rest of the pay on the 15th.

Also, I still want to change my front fender setup. I currently have the Shine Auto Project custom fenders on the front, test fitting them for him, and a lot of people want to see pics of them apparently, so I was thinking maybe I'll just leave them on so people can see them in person lol. And they're still unpainted and un-modified in any way. Even without fender vents lol.

Kane 04-11-2011 03:32 AM

I am coming from Hampton Roads, VA

All military is getting full pay, it may come in 2 paychecks, both on the 15th. So you should be good.

speedjunkie 04-11-2011 09:19 AM

Oh so you're not TOO far then.

Cool. I REALLY want to make this still. I have to check today about leave.
