congratulations on getting it in, but with a week left to Deals Gap, i suspect you'll be quite busy this week. good luck. :)

Sephitrask 04-23-2011 07:06 AM

Oh shit! Have it ready for this week, I want to hear it!!!!!!!!

Video of idle
You Tube Vid

speedjunkie 04-28-2011 02:22 PM

That is spectacular. Sounds so good! Can't wait to see the performance aspect.

Chibana 04-29-2011 01:18 PM

Cool. Love that idle.

Nutsid 04-30-2011 04:12 AM

I'm really looking forward to what kind of power gain you get from this.

rx7 vinnie 04-30-2011 09:05 PM

You were supposed to bring the car with my hoist and tools in the trunk so I can here this beast...........enjoy a bill is in the mail.

TypeSL_T 05-01-2011 11:11 AM

Congrats on getting it running man. Gonna have to set up a meet so we can see this bad boy in person. My car is torn down right now, so I don't know when the next meet is gonna be, but I will post it up on here when I figure out.

diabolical1 05-02-2011 03:09 AM

sounds good. did you make it to Deals Gap? if so, how did it perform overall?

reddozen 05-02-2011 12:09 PM

made it out there fine. it runs great. most of the lope is gone after kane tuned the idle and closed loop maps, but it feels pretty strong so far. I just have to work on tuning the open loop and higher RPM ranges.

reddozen 05-22-2011 06:18 PM

SSV and VDI fixed and working... It pulls harder than I imagined it would. Butt dyno says it's similar to my friends 260HP MR2...

Now to figure out the surging idle, finish tuning and dyno.

A dyno is a must :)... for the idle, did you bump your neutral switch or clutch switch during all the work or maybe its just bad (TSB from mazda on neutral switches)...

I'm pretty sure that's what it is, but I'm trying to eliminate everything else before spending money on it.

speedjunkie 05-23-2011 09:26 AM

I would figure the surging idle is from the port job. That's how mine was. Actually both the last two times I've replaced the engine I've gone to a bigger port than before and each time it hunted for idle. If it's the same for you, I believe the tune itself should take care of it, maybe some minor adjustments to the idle screw also (if you have one, not sure how idle adjustments are set up for the RX-8).

Naa, the factory computer for the RX8 is probably one of the best ECUs ever created... the idle only starts surging after driving, or if it gets really hot. Since I got the SSV and VDI fixed, it does it less, and to less of an extreme, so I'm sure that was a lot of the issue.

Going to try setting the idle back to 1200 RPM tonight and see what happens.

WE3RX7 05-23-2011 08:16 PM

Does the searching idle go away if you depress the clutch pedal?

nope, but it's very mild now that i've fixed the valves.

Oh OK, I thought it surged right at start up. Nevermind.

Valves? I thought it was a rotary?? LOL

SSV and VDI are valves...
Not in the piston engine since, but they direct the aux port air flow...

On the internet!? Very likely...
:cheers2:

speedjunkie 06-10-2011 09:40 AM

Yeah sorry, maybe I should have been more clear, put it in teal or something LOL.

Sephitrask 06-10-2011 04:46 PM

So how is the tuning going with this? dyno numbers yet?

sen2two 07-11-2012 11:55 AM

Over a year old, But I'm wondering if there was any numbers on this?

rx7 vinnie 07-11-2012 12:22 PM

Last time I talked to him... The engine has over 15k on it and pulls hard.... For what it is :-)

sen2two 07-12-2012 12:48 PM

That's great...

Did he ever mention any dyno numbers...? Or maybe you could ask him?

rx7 vinnie 07-12-2012 05:27 PM

That engine will last forever lulz...I'll tell him to chime in.

willnordacgreen1211 07-12-2012 09:28 PM

I dont think hes dyno'd it yet? could be wrong

reddozen 07-13-2012 07:37 AM

No dyno numbers. To actually see anything, you'd need a before an after. I have no "before" pull on any of my local dynos, so the actual power gain can't be established.

If I pulled a 180, the motor would look normal, but if i pulled a 150 before, then you could see that it was good for a 30 HP gain. Dynos are too unpredictable for me to waste $100 on a number that means nothing. I'll do it one day at a dyno day event, but I'm in no hurry to throw money away.

Another guy on 8 club with a similar setup is claiming an 80 HP gain, but I'm not sure I trust that number...

rx7 vinnie 07-13-2012 08:46 AM

Carma is having dyno/bikini wash day July 22nd.... Put it on there, I'll pay just to see what it puts down.

We can give it a go if I'm back in town by then. I'm going out to Ohio to visit family and coming back sometime next week. It still needs more tuning, but I think it should be as good or better than stock.

I could go back and pull it again after the tunings done too.

Nutsid 07-13-2012 03:30 PM

Was there not a noticeable jump in power between stock and bridge? I am assuming you're running a different tune than stock, but with you saying it still needs tuned makes me curious if you just threw a base tune on it and went with it or tuned it at all.

It's tuned enough to run fine in closed loop around 13~14 AFR. Open loop is tuned to hold the factory AFR range. Right now it's all just tuned to be "like" stock. We'll push it further when I have time... busy with job, family, 3 websites, etc.

I understand. Hopefully you can get it tuned relatively soon and get back with us. Like you said, the power numbers don't matter much, but I'd be very interested in knowing the end result anyway.
